Chapter 48: The Spoils are Settled in the Ring

“Please help me tally these up. I’d like to exchange everything inside for spirit stones.”

The Guild President accepted the storage bags with a composed expression, his hands steady as he peered inside. His professional calm, however, was a thin veneer.

The bags were filled with the corpses of Violent Bears, all of them preserved in near-perfect condition. It was clear they had all been dispatched with a single, decisive blow. From the lingering auras, he could sense the distinct power fluctuations of seven-star and even eight-star demonic beasts.

While the Violent Bear clan was considered a lower-to-middle-tier threat among the invading races, their patriarch and clan elders were formidable powerhouses, almost all of whom had reached the seventh or eighth star.

The Guild President took a long, deep look at the black-robed figure before him. He quickly cupped his hands in a gesture of respect. “Senior, would you be willing to return to the Guild with me? I will need to conduct a careful inventory. I assure you, it will not take much of your time.”

Nagumo gave a slight, calm nod.

In the next instant, he and the Guild President transformed into twin streaks of light, piercing the sky. The other officials, sensing an opportunity, also became streams of light and followed close behind. They could practically smell the scent of treasure in the air. If the Guild was about to feast, they were determined to at least get a taste of the soup; after all, everyone present had earned their share of the spoils.

Upon arriving at the Guild, Nagumo was personally escorted to the exclusive VIP room. A staff member in a form-fitting qipao gracefully served a pot of high-quality tea, her movements practiced and elegant. She then stood quietly to the side, a professional smile fixed on her face, awaiting any further instructions.

As he sipped his tea, Nagumo took the opportunity to inspect the storage devices he had taken from the Violent Bear patriarch and elders. His consciousness swept through them, and his eyes widened slightly at the sight. He found mountains upon mountains of spirit stones—top-grade, high-grade, and medium-grade littered the space, with not a single low-grade stone in sight.

A quick scan with his divine sense confirmed his initial estimate: the spirit stones alone amounted to a value equivalent to several hundred million. And that wasn’t even counting the other natural treasures and rare materials. If sold, they would likely fetch another few hundred million.

Among the treasures was the clan’s most prized secret: the Vitality Fruit. This miraculous fruit could repair damaged human meridians and even regenerate severed limbs. There were ten of them in total. Such an item was priceless and exceedingly rare. Every prominent family had descendants or elders who had suffered crippling injuries in battle.

Nagumo decided to keep these for himself. Even if he had no immediate use for them, it was inevitable that a day would come when he or someone he knew would need them.

He mentally commanded the system, pouring all the newly acquired spirit stones into it. Then, he checked his simulator panel. The interface flickered and updated.

It was just as he had feared. Previously, a single simulation cost ten medium-grade spirit stones. Now, the price had skyrocketed to one thousand medium-grade spirit stones per attempt. Still, Nagumo didn’t feel it was a loss. If he had tried to use those same one thousand stones for his own cultivation, he might not have even advanced a single minor realm.

He suspected his “beginner’s protection period” had ended, and the system had reverted to its standard pricing. If worse came to worst, he would just have to go scavenging in a few secret realms. And if that didn’t work… he could always become Nexus again.

At the thought, Nagumo’s expression suddenly stiffened. A feeling of deep loss, as if he had just misplaced a fortune worth hundreds of millions, washed over him. He had almost forgotten. Nexus possessed skills that manipulated space and time. When the dimensional rift had opened and closed, he shouldn’t have just exited. He should have swept through the area, plundering everything of value before leaving.

Nagumo let out a heavy sigh. This must be fate—you gain some, you lose some. He also had to admit he had been far too reckless in his haste.

He remained in the VIP room for a while longer, long enough to finish the entire pot of tea. He began to wonder why the inventory was taking so long. The contents weren’t that complicated: just over a hundred Violent Bear corpses and a few miscellaneous items.

Just as a flicker of puzzlement crossed his mind, a very different scene was unfolding in a training hall not far away.

Inside a boxing ring, the old principal from Nagumo’s academy wore a twisted, exceptionally fierce expression. With a guttural roar, he lifted the city’s mayor high into the air and slammed him brutally onto the canvas. He immediately followed up, transitioning into a cross-armbar, locking the mayor’s arm and pulling back with ruthless force.

The mayor slapped the mat frantically with his free hand. “I surrender! I surrender! Stop pulling, it’s gonna break! It’s gonna break!”

Seeing his opponent concede, the old principal finally released the hold. He stood up, brushed the imaginary dust from his clothes, and raised both hands high in victory. “Who else? Who’s next? Come on out and face me!”

Below the ring, the other officials nursed their own wounds. Every one of them had a bruised and swollen face. They hissed in pain as they gingerly touched their battered spots.

Why were they fighting in a ring? The reason was simple: the resources Nagumo had brought back were just that precious.

A Violent Bear was a treasure from head to toe. Its gall, core, and heart’s blood, in particular, were the primary ingredients for a pill known as the Barrier-Breaking Pill. It was an auxiliary medicine specifically used to help a cultivator break through the bottleneck from the peak of the six-star realm to the seventh star. The higher the level of the bear that provided the ingredients, the more potent the effect. The pill worked by allowing the user to harness the surge of power from the beast’s bloodline to shatter their own limits in one explosive push.

Through sheer grit and fury, the old principal had successfully secured the gall, heart’s blood, and core of the eight-star Violent Bear patriarch.

Not long after, the Guild President, his own face looking somewhat bruised and swollen, walked back into the VIP room carrying the storage bag.

Nagumo glanced at the Guild President’s puffy cheek and the faint discoloration near his eye. He had no idea what the man had just been through, nor did he have any intention of asking. Some things were better left unsaid; asking would only make it more awkward.

Nagumo reached out, took the storage bag, and gave it a quick inspection. The value came out to roughly three hundred million. He casually tossed all the spirit stones into the system.

The interface changed once more.

He chose not to liquidate the natural treasures, deciding to keep them in reserve. A day would inevitably come when he needed them. With his business concluded, he left the Guild, melting away into the darkness of the night.

Early the next morning, Nagumo slung his backpack over his shoulder and arrived at the Sakura District extraordinary Academy. He had decided to simply blend in and keep a low profile for a while, to let the mental fatigue from his time as one of Noah’s chosen fade away.

He turned his head, his gaze drifting toward the training grounds. He watched the students sparring, their youthful energy a stark contrast to the grim realities he faced. He noted the flash of fair skin as the female students moved, their movements full of life.

‘How vibrant,’he thought.’To be so young.’

Just as Nagumo was quietly enjoying this moment of peace, the Demonic Beast clans were in an uproar.

The final punch Nagumo had thrown before leaving their dimension had utterly devastated more than half of the Violent Bear clan’s territory. If not for the few remaining clan elders sacrificing their lives to intercept the residual force of the fist, the entire plane where the Violent Bear clan resided would have likely been shattered to pieces.

This single act of overwhelming power had bought the human world a long period of quiet from the Demonic Beasts.

However, the Fierce Beasts were another matter entirely. The Demonic Beasts, for all their aggression, still possessed cunning and a capacity for fear. The Fierce Beasts, on the other hand, were completely blinded by a baleful, instinctual rage. Whatever intelligence they might have had was boiled down to a simple, brutal philosophy: “Life and death are meaningless. If you’re not convinced, we fight.”

After the morning classes ended, Nagumo headed to the cafeteria for lunch. As he walked down the hallway, a delicate young girl emerged from the classroom next door. Her eyes lit up with surprise and delight upon seeing him.

With a soft patter of footsteps, she ran up to him. The girl was petite, and standing before Nagumo, she seemed even smaller.

Nishinomiya Shoko took out a small communication board and quickly wrote on it.

“Nagumo, you look a bit tired. Don’t overdo your cultivation. You must balance work and rest.”

Nagumo looked down at the little tag-along in front of him. He never would have expected that a casual act of kindness when they were younger would result in this. She had somehow become convinced that she was going to marry him and had been following him around ever since. He didn’t have the heart to do anything about it, so he simply let her.

He reached out and gently patted her head. “Instead of worrying about me, you should worry about your own cultivation. Isn’t your current level a bit weak?”
