Chapter 45: The Child Has Finally Grown Up
Orb looked utterly lost, so Jugglus Juggler began to explain the subtle differences between the various rulers and their claims to the planet.
Just then, a flash of inspiration seemed to strike Gai Kurenai. He cut through Juggler’s explanation with a simple, radical thought. “This is all so troublesome. Why don’t we just cut down the Tree of Life?”
The words hung in the air, instantly freezing the atmosphere in the cockpit. Everyone fell silent. Nagumo turned, looking at Orb with a flicker of genuine surprise.
Seeing the stunned reactions, Orb thought he’d misspoken. He scratched the back of his head, a sheepish, awkward laugh escaping him. “Did… did I say something wrong?”
A slow, deeply gratified smile spread across Nagumo’s face. He reached out and clapped a firm hand on Orb’s shoulder. “No, you’re absolutely right. It finally feels like the child has grown up.”
Juggler cradled his Serpent-Hearted Sword, his gaze drifting upward theatrically. “Ah, the sky is so blue,” he sighed with dramatic flair. “Amate, Queen of Kanon, do you see? Your child has finally grown up. He’s no longer the naive boy he used to be.”
Rikka immediately shot down his performance. “Hey, we’re in outer space. You’re looking at the ship’s ceiling plating. There’s no atmospheric simulation, and there is definitely no blue sky.”
Miyabi, the royal guard, finally snapped out of his shock, his voice tight with indignation. “No! The Tree of Life is the sacred symbol of the Kanon people! It cannot be cut down!”
Nagumo’s hand moved in a blur. A sharp crack echoed through the cockpit as he slapped Miyabi across the face. The man’s cheek instantly swelled, turning a puffy, angry red. Nagumo pointed a finger directly at his nose, his voice dropping to a dangerously cold register.
“And can your queen still protect that tree? Have you stopped to think for one second why the Tree of Life created the War Deity in the first place? It was to protect itself. I can guarantee, with one hundred percent certainty, that the Tree of Life wants to leave Planet Kanon more than anyone.”
Nagumo knew for a fact that after the original story’s conflict, the severed Tree of Life would take root and sprout on Earth, completely abandoning its dying homeworld. After a long and winding journey, it would eventually end up as a bonsai, back in Juggler’s possession.
Miyabi fell silent, the force of the slap and the sting of Nagumo’s words leaving him reeling. He began to truly consider the argument. Deep in his heart, a thought he dared not voice took shape: The Queen was wrong.
It wasn’t long before their ship arrived in the planet’s orbit. Upon arrival, they were met with a warm welcome—a seething swarm of countless Bezelbs hurtling toward them.
Orb raised his Orb Ring. “I’m borrowing the power of your light!” In a blinding flash, he transformed, materializing in the void of space before the insectoid horde. He focused, condensing shimmering discs of energy in both hands—the Eight-Point Ultra Slash. With a flick of his will, he sent the two saw-wheels of light flying. They sliced through the vacuum, weaving and banking through the Bezelb swarm in a deadly, controlled dance.
Gai found himself marveling at the technique. These cutting attacks felt so much more intuitive and efficient than his beam skills. The lethality was astonishing, and they consumed far less of his energy.
As if on cue, the real threat emerged from the planet’s atmosphere below: several giant-sized Bezelbs, flanked by the monstrous form of a Birdon, all under the influence of puppet toxins.
Just as Juggler reached for the Evoltruster, Nagumo acted. In a silent, instantaneous transformation, he became Ultraman Legend, appearing in the path of the colossal monsters.
He raised his hands high, gathering cosmic energy. A brilliant, overwhelming wave of power—the Spark Legend—erupted from his palms. The beam washed over the battlefield, and in a single, silent instant, the smaller Bezelbs, the giant Bezelbs, and the puppet-controlled Birdon were all utterly annihilated.
The moment the last mote of monster dust dissipated, a single star descended from the heavens, resolving into the form of Ultraman Dyna.
A slightly cocky, challenging voice echoed directly in Nagumo’s mind. ‘That’s a rather brutish way to fight. It’s not the path of a true Warrior of Light.’
Hearing the telepathic critique, Nagumo slowly turned, his crystalline eyes fixing on the newcomer with a chillingly cold stare.
It was only then that Dyna got a clear look at who he had just lectured. His jaw dropped. A metaphorical greenish tint seemed to wash over his silver face as, deep inside, Asuka Shin’s heart plummeted into a state of absolute panic.
‘Holy crap! It’s Legend! I just questioned the Great Will of the Universe itself!’
Nagumo began to walk toward Dyna, each step slow and deliberate. He raised a hand. Without any ceremony, he slapped Dyna clean out of the air. The hero crashed to the planet’s surface with enough force to drive him into the ground like a tent stake, leaving only his head and shoulders exposed.
Nagumo loomed over him, looking down. “Are you questioning my combat style?”
Dyna’s head shook back and forth so fast it became a blur. “No, no, no, no! It’s not that! I misspoke! A complete slip of the tongue!”
He was having a frantic flashback. Musashi had warned him. He’d told him that Legend had a notoriously short fuse. When he and Justice had first merged into Legend, the cosmic being had unleashed the planet-scorching Aurora Power without a single word of warning. Musashi had sternly cautioned him never, ever to make Legend angry, because when he got angry, he would literally knock your head off.
Dyna was now a firm believer. This was exactly what Musashi had described. Legend’s temper was indeed terrible, and he had come terrifyingly close to having his own head knocked clean off.
Nagumo pointed a finger down at the buried Ultra. “You’re not that old, but you’ve got a big mouth. Is your brain broken? You want to play the wise senior everywhere you go? Is it really that fun to act so high and mighty? Answer me!”
Dyna wisely chose to remain silent. Speaking now seemed like a very, very bad idea.
Nagumo bent down, grabbed Dyna’s head with one hand, and yanked him straight out of the ground with a sickening schlorp.
A low chuckle rumbled from Nagumo’s chest. “It seems you’re still not convinced. In that case, I’ll change my form to have a proper chat with you.”
In the next instant, a kaleidoscopic storm of cosmic light erupted from Legend’s body. A powerful, energetic BGM seemed to swell out of nowhere as, amidst the swirling energies, Ultraman Saga appeared before Dyna.
Staring at the legendary fused form, Dyna was stunned into utter immobility. His mind, which had been racing with panic, was now occupied by two simple, deep words.
‘Holy crap!’
He knew the history. He, Zero, and Cosmos had to be pushed to the absolute brink of life and death, their powers combined in a moment of ultimate desperation, just to achieve this form. And here, this being had done it effortlessly, just to make a point.
Orb, meanwhile, stood off to the side like a well-behaved student, watching the lesson unfold. When seniors had things to discuss, it was best for a junior like him to just stay quiet and observe. He was, however, deeply impressed. This senior who had taught him how to fight as a Warrior of Light was clearly a terrifyingly powerful figure in the universe; he’d just watched another senior become paralyzed with fear before him.
Nagumo’s gaze, now filtered through Saga’s eyes, shifted toward Saiki’s distant base camp. He opened his arms wide, and using Saga’s nigh-limitless power, he unleashed the ultimate technique—the Saga Maximum.
In that one critical second, Saiki managed to activate a spatial transfer device, ejecting himself from the planet just in the nick of time. But the Bezelb swarms left behind… the giant monsters… the advanced equipment and planetary installations… all of it suffered the consequences.
They were simply erased, turning to fine dust under the silent, all-consuming wave of cosmic energy.
As for the imprisoned, terribly-singing man named Shinra, he was completely fine. The destruction of his cage simply caused him to fall to the ground, breaking both his legs in the process—a minor injury, all things considered.
Asuka stood frozen on the spot, not daring to move a single muscle, terrified that another slap or, worse, another planet-scalding beam was coming his way. At the same time, he finally understood. This was the oppressive, absolute power of one of the Four Mysterious Ultras. He had been a part of Saga before, but he had never, not for a single moment, felt a pressure so immense, so crushing, that it threatened to extinguish his own light.
From the sidelines, Orb began to applaud. He thought his senior’s method of setting off fireworks was truly amazing. He had to work hard to become that cool someday.
