Chapter 41: What a Pity
Gazing at the three transformation devices arrayed before you, alongside the regal Ultraman King’s Mantle, you found yourself facing a genuine dilemma. Which one should you use the next time an Alien Beast appeared?
You closed your eyes and reached out, letting fate guide your hand. Your fingers brushed against a cool, complex surface—the device for Ultraman Legend. A sense of destiny settled over you. The decision was made: the next time you appeared, you would unleash the power of the legendary giant.
It was in that same moment, just as you became the chosen champion of the four cosmic entities, that Dark Zagi found his opportunity. He launched a surprise attack on the River Lethe, the prison that held him, and successfully restored his full strength.
Simultaneously, the Evoltruster in your possession began to thrum, emitting a low pulse that mimicked the rhythm of a heartbeat. As you picked it up, a vision flooded your mind: an image of Dark Zagi, wreathed in shadow and malice, manifesting in the heart of a town.
Without hesitation, you snatched up the transformation device for Legend. With a press of the button, you were consumed by a blinding flash of light. In an instant, Ultraman Legend streaked across the sky, hurtling toward the scene.
At that moment, Dark Zagi had no inkling of the doom he was about to face.
Upon arriving, you didn’t bother with posturing or words. You simply delivered a single, thunderous slap across Dark Zagi’s face.
The impact was absolute. Dark Zagi was sent spinning a full two and a half times on the spot, the sheer force stunning him into momentary incomprehension. With his back now facing you, he whipped his head around, his crimson eyes widening at the sight of this unfamiliar, overwhelmingly powerful Ultraman.
‘If you were Nexus, I might be wary,’he thought, a surge of defiant rage building within him.’But who are you? Who do you think you are, acting so high and mighty before me? Do you not know that I am the invincible Lord Zagi?’
He roared, channeling dark energy into his fist, and charged.
The next thing he knew, he was airborne. A single punch from you had launched him into the sky like a discarded toy. Floating helplessly in the upper atmosphere, Dark Zagi felt a cold dread seep into his being. Something was terribly wrong. He was utterly, completely outmatched, as helpless as a newborn chick before a hawk.
On the ground, you raised your hands high. Cosmic energy, brilliant and pure, arced between your outstretched arms. With a powerful swing, you unleashed your ultimate attack toward the heavens—the Spark Legend.
This time, Dark Zagi didn’t even have a chance to fire a counter-beam. He took the full, unmitigated force of the Spark Legend. His form was simply… erased.
Meanwhile, in a hidden, transcendental space, four ancient figures observed your every move.
Ultraman Legend puffed out his chest. “See that? Your Epitome Holder is quite impressive. I suppose he’s mine now.”
A muscle in Ultraman Noah’s jaw twitched, his silver form radiating a cold fury. He had never expected you to so brazenly betray Nexus and throw your lot in with that reckless brute, Legend.
Of course, you were completely oblivious to the drama unfolding in the higher dimensions. After eliminating Dark Zagi, you flew straight to the dam that served as the Night Raiders’ headquarters.
To your great regret, you learned that the man who had been administering your daily treatments in the Photon’s Genesis had already died. He had become the second-generation Dark Mephisto, and when Zagi restored his own power, he had siphoned away the man’s remaining life force as fuel. A pity.
You went directly to the secondary person in charge, Deputy Captain Yuu Kirasawa, and without a word, struck him hard across the face. Twice.
A quiet, certain voice inside you insisted that he had played a part in the constant attacks you had endured.
After that, you took direct control of the Photon’s Genesis device, bathing in its restorative light every single day. You drank the nutrient solution delivered by the Night Raiders, finding it strange that their camp never tried to lace it with sleeping pills, paralytics, or muscle relaxants. The taste was rather unpleasant, but the nutritional content was excellent.
As you repeated this daily routine, you could feel yourself growing stronger, your power climbing to new heights with each passing day.
During this period, that unhinged woman, Nagi Saijyo, actually came to apologize to you.
You kicked her out of the room.
Damn it all, she had hunted you like a rabid dog. There was no way you were accepting her apology. Besides, you didn’t feel that breaking the legs and ribs of a few Memory Police officers was something that required an apology in the first place.
One day, Kazuki Komon found you. Looking at your hands with desperate hope in his eyes, he begged you to help save his girlfriend.
You found the request a bit odd, but then he explained that his girlfriend was the very person who had been turned into Dark Faust.
Feeling the coincidence was too significant to ignore, you agreed to make the trip. When you arrived at their home, you saw that the journalist, Shinya Kogorogi, was also there. A strange, fleeting thought crossed your mind.
You felt that, metaphorically speaking, Komon’s head was looking a bit green. It was just an illusion, of course, a flicker of absurd humor in a grim situation.
You entered the room and saw Riko Saida lying weakly on the bed. The moment he saw her, Kazuki rushed to her side and held her hand. The two of them gazed at each other with such deep affection that you suspected if she were in better health and you weren’t there, they might have gotten straight to the main event.
Regarding her condition—a body that was little more than an empty shell—you had no solution.
But then you thought of the gifts those four old geezers had given you. It seemed like both Ultraman King and Ultraman Noah could handle something like this. And you knew, with absolute certainty, that they were watching you right now. You definitely couldn’t ask Noah; he was a black-hearted taskmaster who would never let you switch Epitome Holders, content to work you to death.
That left Ultraman King. His little King Hammer was said to be all-powerful. A few taps from that could fix just about anything.
An idea formed. You found a clothes hanger and used it to carefully hang up the King’s Mantle. Then, you rummaged through the house and found an incense burner, some incense sticks, and a few candles.
You then pulled the bewildered Kazuki Komon and Riko Saida over, preparing to have them kneel and worship the King’s Mantle with you.
The very next moment, a brilliant beam of light descended from the sky, enveloping Riko. She felt a surge of life return to her, her body instantly recovering. Overjoyed, she threw her arms around Kazuki. He hugged her back just as excitedly, and the two began spinning around in the small room, lost in their own world.
You raised an eyebrow. The light felt identical to Nexus’s energy. It must have been that old geezer Noah who intervened.
Looking at the items you had prepared, a mischievous glint entered your eyes. You took out the other three transformation devices and began bowing to them as well.
Seeing you bow to these three sacred-looking items, Shinya Kogorogi, who also knew they were transformation devices, immediately took three incense sticks, knelt, and began to worship them with devout reverence.
Kazuki and Riko, snapping out of their joyful haze, saw what was happening and quickly joined in, their faces full of sincere piety.
The scene was abstract. Incredibly, surreally abstract. If an outsider were to walk in, they would surely think they had stumbled upon some bizarre cult ritual.
In another dimension, Noah wiped a cold sweat from his forehead. He had been moments away from letting the Epitome Holder he had personally selected kneel to Ultraman King. If that had actually happened, his own seniority would have dropped a full generation below King’s.
Ultraman King, standing to the side, regretfully put away his King Hammer. What a pity. If only he had been a little faster.
The other two cosmic beings, one retracting a golden light and the other a colorful aura, both sighed with matching disappointment.
Noah watched the three sighing figures, a vein throbbing in his temple. He then turned his gaze back to you, who were now leading his other chosen Epitome Holders in a grand worship session involving three transformation devices and the King’s Mantle.
Noah was rendered speechless by your actions. You weren’t this… unhinged at the beginning. But ever since you started the Photon’s Genesis treatments and began scolding him, you had become increasingly unpredictable.
And yet, he had to admit it. You were, without a doubt, the only Epitome Holder who could truly unleash the full, untamed power of Nexus.
