Chapter 40: The Chosen of the Four Gods

My sudden, venomous outburst made Gourogi Shinya, who was standing nearby, flinch. He had absolutely no idea who this “Noah” I was cursing to the nine hells was, but judging by the sheer ferocity of my words, it was clear the target was no friend to humanity.

After a moment of stunned silence, a flicker of comprehension crossed Gourogi Shinya’s face. His eyes widened slightly, as if he had just connected some distant, forbidden dots and finally understood exactly who—or what—Noah was.

Having vented a fraction of my frustration, I turned my attention to the flashing device in the distance. The Evoltruster was pulsing with a steady light, projecting a holographic image of a small village. The architecture was marked with distinctive symbols of Shenzhou, a place I was supposed to be protecting.

And striding toward that village was an Alien Beast—a grotesque amalgamation that had fused the most terrifying characteristics of every single creature I had defeated over the past month.

“Son of a…” I muttered, the curse dying on my lips as I started moving. I snatched the Evoltruster from the ground, the cool metal a familiar weight in my hand. Without a second’s hesitation, I drew it from its sheath, and my body dissolved into a crimson ball of light, streaking across the sky and arriving at the scene in an instant.

My arrival was announced by a thunderous impact that sent the fused Alien Beast careening through the air.

I materialized from the sphere of light, my feet touching the ground as I instinctively fell into a fighting stance. As I sized up the monstrosity before me, I quickly shifted my form, adopting my own version of Nexus’s youthful, silver-and-red Anphans form.

The world around us warped and shimmered as I unleashed the Meta Field, trapping us in our own pocket dimension. A cold certainty settled in my gut: this was going to be the most difficult battle I had ever fought.

The lingering effects of the experimental drugs they had pumped into me hadn’t worn off yet. Having to deal with this on top of my weakened state was genuinely, deeply infuriating.

Channeling a torrent of powerful light energy into my right hand, I threw a punch fueled by a month’s worth of resentment, burying my glowing fist deep into the opponent’s chest.

The fused Alien Beast’s entire body lifted off the ground. It flew backward as if shot from a cannon, its multiple eyes bulging so far out they looked ready to pop from their sockets. It landed with a ground-shaking crash that kicked up a massive cloud of dust within the Meta Field.

I stared blankly at my own fist, a flicker of confusion breaking through my rage. The drugs hadn’t worn off, so how did I manage a blow with that much power? The result left me completely baffled.

There was no time to dwell on it, however. The fused Alien Beast was already stirring, pushing itself back onto its gnarled legs.

I surged forward, both hands now wreathed in concentrated light. I met the creature with a relentless flurry of strikes, a storm of blows hammering against its reinforced carapace.

With every punch, a shower of intense electric sparks erupted from the point of impact. The Alien Beast twitched and spasmed, occasionally being sent staggering or flying backward from the sheer force.

It was in the midst of this relentless beating that the answer finally dawned on me. I could feel the light energy within my own body, not just responding to my will, but actively increasing, swelling with a warmth and power that was becoming stronger with every passing moment. I almost had to thank that dim-witted fool, Gourogi.

An average of three Photon Rejuvenation sessions a day, coupled with a constant IV drip of high-potency nutrient solution, hadn’t corrupted me as they’d intended. It had made me stronger.

Of course, I still wasn’t fully recovered. If I were at my peak, my power would be on an entirely different level.

With that realization, the fight became less of a battle and more of a catharsis. I subjected the Alien Beast to a brutal, one-sided beatdown, venting every last ounce of frustration I had accumulated over the past torturous month.

As I unleashed the final beam of light that tore through its core and ended its existence, I could have sworn I saw an expression of deep relief in its fading eyes.

The Meta Field collapsed, and I reverted to my human form. From the internal storage space of my stone wing, I retrieved the identification I had prepared.

I descended upon a small county town and had a feast, devouring everything in sight to replenish the immense energy my body desperately needed.

Afterward, I found a cheap hotel and collapsed onto the bed. The moment my body relaxed, the moment I closed my eyes, I was dragged into the depths of sleep.

Early the next morning, I found a small street stall and bought out their entire stock of soy milk and fried dough sticks. I ate while my mind raced, piecing together a new plan.

I already knew the location of the Night Raid Team’s base. Their nutrient solution was excellent—a perfect tool to accelerate my body’s recovery. I just wasn’t sure about the taste. And that Photon Rejuvenation… once I was fully recovered, I could probably use its energy output as a beam attack for training purposes. As for the muscle relaxants and sedatives they’d used on me, I’d been subjected to them so many times that developing a complete immunity was only a matter of time.

While I was calmly plotting my next move, a certain member of the Night Raid Team hadn’t slept a wink.

Gourogi Shinya stared at the monitor, his face pale under the sterile lights of the command center. He completely failed to understand how a human could undergo Photon Rejuvenation three times a day for a solid month and not be corrupted by the Alien Beast factor.

Not only had I survived, but I was still able to fight. And to his utter, bone-chilling disbelief, I was getting stronger. He knew the specifications of that last creature. It had fused the most powerful attributes of twelve different Alien Beasts, incorporating all their advantages and even improving their defensive capabilities to an unmatched degree.

My performance, my very existence, caused him deep distress. He was on the verge of abandoning the entire plan to corrupt Nexus, considering it might be simpler to just launch a direct assault on the headquarters of the Forgotten River.

The mastermind behind the mastermind shared his sentiment. From the shadows, a darker presence watched the data scroll across a hidden screen, feeling that my growth was simply too rapid, too uncontrollable.

They considered recalling all their deployed Alien Beasts to re-fuse with Zagi, a desperate move to restore their primary weapon to its full power. They felt that if I continued to evolve at this rate, I would soon become a threat far greater than any they had ever anticipated.

I, on the other hand, was blissfully unaware of their cosmic anxieties. I continued to wander through the cities of Shenzhou, occasionally stopping at a snack stall to buy a small mountain of local treats.

After all, the identity I’d arranged for myself this time came with a decent amount of wealth. The bank account had more than enough money to fund my leisurely tour. It was a significant improvement over most of my identities in other worlds. For a fleeting moment, I felt a pang of nostalgia for my life in the previous world—specifically for a bank card with a seemingly endless string of zeros.

What exactly had I done in that world, though? The details were fuzzy, lost to the haze of countless simulations.

I only remembered that my life there had ended with me blowing up a giant bug. As for how I did it, the memory was a blank.

Meanwhile, in a dimension far beyond my perception, a cosmic entity was boasting.

He puffed out his chest, proudly introducing his current Epitome Holder—me—to three other ancient beings.

“See that? That’s my guy. Pretty awesome, right?” Noah’s voice echoed with smug satisfaction.

The other three old-timers—beings of immense power and stature—each responded with a silent, universally understood gesture of contempt. Yet, beneath their scorn, they had to acknowledge it. This Epitome Holder was indeed impressive. So impressive, in fact, that they were already plotting how to steal him away sooner or later.

That night, after falling asleep, I had a dream. A seven-colored light bloomed in the darkness of my mind, coalescing into the most magnificent suit of power in history: Ultraman Saga. He simply nodded at me, a silent acknowledgment, and reached out his hand.

A beam of that same seven-colored light shot forth, entering my body and suffusing my very soul. Just as I thought I was waking up, the dream shifted.

Immediately afterward, a new figure appeared. A muscular, powerfully built Ultraman I recognized as Legend. He reached out and tossed me a transformation device, one that resembled the Cosmos Plenum used by Ultraman Cosmos. He nodded, then gave me a firm thumbs-up, as if affirming my worthiness.

Just when I thought the dream had to be over, an old man wearing a regal cape materialized before me. I knew him instantly: Ultraman King.

He waved his hand forward gently, a gesture that promised a bestowal of immense power. But before he could complete the act, Noah appeared out of nowhere and kicked the venerable old Ultra clean out of my dreamscape.

As the King vanished, his magnificent cape detached from his shoulders, drifting down through the ethereal space and landing perfectly, settling right onto my own.

When I woke up the next day, I found my hotel room was no longer empty.

First, there were two transformation devices resting on the nightstand: one was the Saga Brace, for transforming into Ultraman Saga. The other was the device Legend had given me, a beautiful artifact resembling the sun and moon. And draped over the back of a chair was a familiar red cape—the King’s Cape, a defensive artifact of legendary power.

I was utterly speechless, staring at the impossible reality before me. I had, in the span of a single night, become the Chosen of the Four Gods.

A weary sigh escaped my lips. These cosmic entities were clearly far too bored, picking fights with the black-hearted Noah just to squabble over an Epitome Holder.
