Chapter 36: This Dunamist Is Not According to Plan

[Dark Mephisto and Dark Faust—you know their names, but you do not know who they truly are.]

[Afterward, your training became even more rigorous. There was, however, one glaring problem: you ran out of money.]

[The large stack of bills you acquired from relieving those thugs of their ill-gotten gains had been completely spent during this recent period of intense training.]

The simulation log continued to scroll, but for Nagumo, it was a lived experience. He remembered the feeling of his empty wallet with a wry sense of irony. The thick wad of cash he’d ‘liberated’ had dwindled to nothing, a stark reminder of how quickly funds evaporated in the face of his demanding regimen.

[You felt that money truly does not last. That night, you donned inconspicuous clothing, pulled on a mask, and headed to a nearby site known for gang transactions.]

[You successfully obtained a large sum of money and also acquired a crate of contraband.]

[As for that contraband, you located a sulfuric acid pool in an abandoned factory and disposed of it all.]

[You despise those who deal in such substances more than anything.]

A flicker of a memory, sharp and clear. He hadn’t just been taking their money; he’d been enforcing a personal brand of justice. The sight of the crate filled with drugs had stirred a cold, deep-seated revulsion within him. Watching the evidence dissolve into noxious fumes had been its own reward.

[Time flew by quickly.]

[You continued to fight Space Beasts and temper your body as you always had.]

[also, you noticed that the frequency of Space Beast appearances was becoming more and more common.]

[However, for you, it was a trivial matter to rush to several different locations in a single day.]

[You treated it all as physical training. With the support of your abilities and your substantial recovery functions, as long as you had enough money to buy sufficient food, you could fully recover your stamina.]

[Approximately ten days later.]

[At dusk, you arrived at an alcohol processing factory via the stone wing, where you saw a giant Space Beast.]

The creature was grotesque, a mass of writhing flesh and thorny appendages. It had wrapped its thick tentacles around the factory’s distillation towers, its immense weight threatening to bring the entire structure down.

[The opponent’s tentacles were wrapped around two humans, flaunting its power before you.]

[As you prepared to transform, you glanced down and to the side, catching sight of the youth you had saved once before. Seeing the blue uniform he wore, it seemed he had joined the Night Raider team.]

It was the same boy, Komon Kazuki. His face was pale with fear, but there was a new resolve in his eyes. The uniform, however, told a more complicated story.

[Looking at the woman beside him, your brow furrowed slightly, your eyes showing a flicker of disgust.]

His gaze shifted to the woman next to Komon. Her expression was hard, her hand gripping a sidearm. Nagi Saijyo. The name surfaced from the chaotic depths of his fragmented memories, and with it, a powerful and instinctive revulsion.

[Without a shred of mercy—in those memory fragments of yours, this person simply had something wrong with their head.]

[Including those high-level commanders in the Night Raider team, they all had problems; these impressions were the most vivid in your broken memories.]

A dangerous fanaticism burned in her eyes, a trait he recognized with weary familiarity. She, and the command structure she answered to, were not allies. They were liabilities.

[Finally, you pulled out the Evoltruster, and Nexus appeared once more. Seeing the enemy flaunting its hostages, you charged forward without hesitation, light energy condensing in your hands.]

The crimson and silver giant materialized in a flash of brilliant light. There was no grand posturing, no wasted motion. The Space Beast was a threat, the hostages were in danger—the equation was simple. Nexus blurred into motion, a silver streak against the dying sun.

[You chopped down at the two horns on the enemy’s head, while your other hand was not idle.]

With one hand, he formed a blade of pure energy, cleanly shearing off the beast’s prominent horns in a shower of sparks. Simultaneously, his other hand moved.

[Lashing out with a whip of light, you smoothly rescued the two people and tossed them to a safe place nearby.]

The luminous whip wrapped around the two captured factory workers, plucking them from the Space Beast’s grasp with impossible gentleness. A flick of his wrist sent them sailing through the air, landing softly and safely a hundred meters away, far from the impending battle.

[Then, you leaped directly into the air, flipped twice, and struck a flying kick pose. Light energy condensed at your feet, and a Junis Flying Kick sent the Space Beast flying, far away from the factory.]

His purpose was clear: draw the monster away from the volatile chemical plant. The kick connected with a thunderous boom, launching the screeching behemoth out of the industrial complex and into the open wasteland beyond.

Somewhere within the Night Raider command vehicle, a certain strategist stared at his monitor, utterly dumbfounded.

“Holy crap,” he breathed, his carefully constructed plans shattering before his eyes. “What is with this Dunamist? This doesn’t fit the profile at all! He’s a complete combat master!”

He frantically cross-referenced the data. He knew that among Nexus’s previous hosts, there had been combat specialists. But the only one with this level of fluid, overwhelming skill had been driven by a death wish, eventually becoming a puppet for the darkness. This new Dunamist was different. He was calm, efficient, and terrifyingly powerful. This was simply unscientific.

[As you watched the monster and prepared to move forward, you suddenly felt a murderous intent coming from behind.]

It was a sharp, focused spike of malice, unmistakable and utterly human.

[With a flash of your body, you dodged a light bullet from behind, which struck the Space Beast squarely.]

Nexus sidestepped with an almost casual grace. The energy blast, meant for his back, streaked past him and slammed into the dazed Space Beast, making it roar in pain and confusion.

[You glanced sideways and saw that on a nearby patch of open ground, that person was acting like a psychopath, continuously pulling the trigger at you.]

It was her. Nagi Saijyo. Her face was a mask of grim determination as she fired her blaster again and again, each shot aimed directly at the Giant of Light.

[You leaped continuously in the air, flexibly dodging those light bullets.]

Nexus moved like a phantom, a silver blur weaving through the storm of energy bolts. It wasn’t a desperate evasion; it was a dance. A contemptuous, effortless display of superiority.

[None of the shots hit you; they all struck the Space Beast.]

With each dodge, he positioned himself perfectly, allowing Nagi’s own attacks to pummel the monster she was ostensibly there to help fight.

[From time to time, you added a few punches and kicks to the Space Beast as well.]

As he danced between the energy bolts, Nexus would lash out—a swift kick to a joint, a powerful punch to the creature’s torso.

[Every punch and kick of yours caused intense sparks to erupt from the Space Beast’s body.]

[Inflicting unimaginable damage, you beat the Space Beast until it let out cry after cry.]

While Nagi’s blaster shots were mere annoyances to the creature, each of Nexus’s strikes landed with the force of an artillery shell, cracking its carapace and eliciting pathetic whimpers.

[Feeling it was about time, you closed the distance slightly and fired a Cross-Ray Storm at the Space Beast, blowing it up instantly.]

He had toyed with it long enough. Forming the iconic “L” with his arms, Nexus unleashed a torrent of pure energy. The Cross-Ray Storm engulfed the battered Space Beast, and in a blinding flash, it was annihilated.

[Just as you were about to leave, fighter jets in the sky launched an attack on you. You quickly dodged and looked up at those jets.]

Missiles streaked down from the heavens. Nexus twisted in mid-air, the explosives detonating harmlessly behind him. He looked up at the Night Raider jets, the Chrome Chesters, and his internal assessment was confirmed.

[Just as in your memory, the people here really do have problems with their heads. Knowing everything, they still launched an attack on Nexus.]

They knew he was fighting the monsters. They knew he was saving people. And still, they attacked. The foolishness was staggering.

[You raised your right hand to the Nexus Armed on your left arm and waved it forward. A yellow cutting beam shot out, accurately hitting the fighter jet’s engine.]

He didn’t aim for the cockpit. He didn’t aim to destroy. It was a warning. The razor-thin arrow of light sliced through the air and surgically disabled the lead jet’s portside engine. Smoke billowed from the aircraft as it began to spiral downwards, its pilot fighting to regain control.

[You transformed into a red ball of light and quickly vanished.]

His message delivered, Nagumo disengaged.

In a dark, quiet corner of the wasteland, he stood with his arms crossed, watching the crippled fighter jet limp toward an emergency landing. A cold snort escaped his lips.

‘Delusional,’he thought, the word echoing with the weight of countless similar experiences.’They’re trying to control a power they can’t possibly comprehend.’

Could they really hope to control the power of Noah? The name surfaced from his memory, a concept of ultimate, unattainable might. The idea was laughable.

[Taking out the energy blaster gun, you fired a shot into the sky, summoned the stone wing, and vanished.]

At the Night Raider headquarters, a certain strategist felt a cold sweat bead on his forehead. The situation had become serious.

He had originally wanted to test this new Nexus’s attitude toward humans. Even knowing it was a transformation, a bond between the light and a Dunamist, he needed to know where the host’s loyalties lay.

Logically, since the giant had dodged Nagi Saijyo’s attacks without retaliating against her directly, it suggested he was approachable, perhaps even benevolent. He had never, in his worst-case scenarios, expected the consequences of this test to be a precisely disabled, multi-million-dollar aircraft. The message was clear: “Do not mistake my restraint for weakness.”

[After you returned to your residence, you didn’t care. You were simply giving an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.]

Nagumo felt no remorse. He had simply reciprocated their hostility with a measured response. He could bet his life that the attack was an order from the higher-ups. If it weren’t for some idiotic commander’s directive, no one on the Night Raider team would have opened fire—except, perhaps, for that fanatical woman.

[The next day, you trained for the entire day. After replenishing your energy…]

[Just as you were about to sleep, the Evoltruster by your bedside once again emitted the sound of a heartbeat.]

Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

The soft, urgent pulse of light and sound filled the small room. Another one. Already. The fight was far from over.
