Chapter 35: I Too Have Become a Man of Light

As for what was to happen later, you weren’t entirely certain. Your fragmented memories suggested this world was like a series of nesting dolls, one conspiracy hidden within another. Was the final mastermind Dark Lucifer, or was it Darkness Zagi?

While you were lost in thought, the cries of a little girl shattered your concentration.

You saw her—the one who seemed to carry a heavy psychological burden—shouting for a man named Jun as she wandered through the chaos.

The piercing whistle of incoming artillery cut through the air. Without a second thought, you sprinted towards them, snatching the girl and slinging her over your shoulder before tackling the photographer, Jun—who was still utterly engrossed in his work, his eye pressed to his camera’s viewfinder—to the dusty ground.

A series of deafening explosions erupted just behind you. A searing, white-hot agony tore through your back, and the world dissolved into blackness.

When you awoke, you were staring at an unfamiliar ceiling. The sterile smell of antiseptic and the sight of medical equipment surrounding your bed told you everything you needed to know. This was a field hospital.

A dull, throbbing pain radiated from your back. You felt a flicker of gratitude, realizing just how fortunate you were to have survived a shell explosion at such close range.

Your thoughts immediately turned to Jun and the little girl. You hoped they were alright.

You didn’t fully understand the impulse that had driven you to lunge forward like that. Perhaps it was a subconscious attempt to atone for some long-forgotten regret, buried deep in your soul.

Even so, you had no regrets. If you died, you would simply be reborn in another world. It was only one life, after all.

Before long, a patrolling nurse noticed you were awake. Soon after, Jun and the little girl came to visit, their faces etched with gratitude as they thanked you profusely.

You merely shook your head, telling them it was nothing. Then, you turned your attention to the little girl and gave her a stern, thorough scolding for her recklessness.

With her head bowed, she listened to your fierce reprimand in silence, fat tears rolling down her cheeks and splashing onto the floor.

Jun stood off to the side, an awkward smile plastered on his face. He couldn’t find a single word to interject, because everything you said was undeniably true.

That night, you had a dream. You found yourself in a dense forest, and in the distance, you saw a strange building that resembled a primitive, ancient temple.

An overwhelming sense of familiarity washed over you. You broke into a run, drawn toward the structure. As you stepped inside, the world around you shifted.

A giant of light, Nexus, materialized before you and gave a slow, deliberate nod. It extended a hand, and as it did, an object materialized in your own grasp. It was the Evoltruster.

Staring at the device, you finally understood the source of that strange familiarity.

Wasn’t this the unique temple dream experienced only by the chosen Epitome Holders of Nexus?

When you woke again, the morning sun was streaming through the window.

Recalling the dream, you instinctively felt your chest. Your fingers brushed against two hard, metallic objects. You pulled them out. In your hands were the Evoltruster and the accompanying energy sidearm, the Blast Shot.

A dry chuckle escaped your lips. It seemed you, too, could become an Ultraman in this world. However, your mind drifted to the fragmented memories of the trials ahead, and the sheer difficulty of the path.

You knew you needed to train, and train hard.

Half a month passed. Your wounds had completely healed.

The doctors were dumbfounded. They watched you moving about, full of life and vigor, muttering about medical miracles and things that defied belief.

According to their initial prognosis, your injuries should have kept you bedridden for at least six months. Yet, here you were, fully recovered in just two weeks.

After a final series of check-ups, you were discharged from the field hospital.

Standing outside the hospital entrance, you stretched your limbs, feeling the power coursing through your renewed body. If you hadn’t been worried about causing a panic, you wouldn’t have even stayed for the full two weeks.

By the third day, you had already felt your wounds knitting themselves back together. More than that, you noticed your body had become tangibly stronger than before.

You understood then. The unique trait you possessed in this simulation made you stronger every time you were injured.

The only caveat was that you couldn’t be killed outright. If you died, the ability would be useless.

Shortly after leaving the hospital, you heard it—a faint, rhythmic heartbeat echoing in your mind. You immediately headed toward a less populated area to investigate.

You drew the Evoltruster. Looking through its lens, you saw them: several parasitic Alien Beasts, feasting on human victims in a secluded alley.

You aimed the Blast Shot skyward and fired a single pulse of energy, a signal to summon the Stone Flugel. Once you were inside the dimensional craft, it streaked across the sky, racing toward the battlefield.

Arriving at the scene, you could hear the sharp pew-pew-pew of energy weapons.

You concealed yourself behind a large tree, observing the situation from the shadows.

You saw a group of people in blue uniforms engaging the parasitic beasts.

A frown creased your brow. If your memory served you correctly, those were the uniforms of the Night Raid Team.

You vaguely recalled a vice-captain with a rather volatile personality… what was her name? Saijyo Nagi? Or was it something else?

Your memories of this world were a jumbled mess, but your impression of her was particularly strong—mostly because you remembered wanting to slap her across the face on several occasions.

You decided now wasn’t the time to get involved. Your current body was still far too weak. More, you were flat broke. Watching the Night Raid Team efficiently eliminate the Alien Beasts, you decided against offering any assistance.

You fired the Blast Shot into the sky again, summoned the Stone Flugel, and made your way to the nearest urban community.

A few moments later, you emerged from a dark alleyway, casually holding a thick stack of ten-thousand-yen bills.

You let out a quiet sigh. The local delinquents, it seemed, were getting richer and richer these days.

You checked into a hotel and enjoyed a wonderful, uninterrupted sleep.

After waking up and finding a place for breakfast, you heard the heartbeat again.

Using the Stone Flugel to arrive at the scene, you quickly located the Alien Beasts. You raised the Blast Shot and gently squeezed the trigger.

Beams of pure light shot out, instantly breaking the creatures down at a molecular level until they vanished into thin air.

You fired the Blast Shot skyward, summoned the Stone Flugel, and disappeared. Clean and efficient.

Next, you found a gym and began to train. Honestly, you hadn’t wanted to resort to this method. Your original plan was to simply risk your life in battle, knowing you could recover from any injury in a few days. But now that you were an Epitome Holder, you had a responsibility to maintain your physical strength before the true disasters began.

You could only hope that ordinary training would increase your strength, as the power of Nexus was directly linked to the physical and mental fortitude of its host.

In your fragmented memories, you recalled a scene at some ancient ruins where a single Nexus in its base Anphans form had nearly beaten an opponent to a pulp.

The most vivid part of that memory was some guy pretending his light had gone out, lying on the ground as if waiting for a power-up.

After a full day of vigorous exercise and a large, protein-rich dinner, you woke the next morning feeling refreshed and revitalized.

You discovered that the training was working. Although the progress wasn’t explosive, you could feel that you were stronger than you had been the day before.

To be honest, you weren’t sure why, but your control over your body was exceptionally precise.

You could clearly perceive every minute change, every strengthening fiber within your own muscles.

For the next six months, you fell into a routine. You continued to use the Blast Shot to eliminate small-fry Alien Beasts while maintaining a rigorous training schedule.

Sometimes, you would arrive at a scene a little late and would silently observe the Night Raid Team’s operations from the sidelines.

To this day, you had not transformed into Nexus even once, as no giant monsters had yet appeared.

One day, on a winding mountain highway, you arrived at a scene to see a young man slumped on the ground. A parasitic beast was lunging at him, claws and fangs bared for the kill.

Realizing you were out of time, you raised the Evoltruster. In a flash of light, you appeared before him. The towering form of Nexus Anphans manifested on the mountain road and sent a single, powerful punch into the small Alien Beast, obliterating it.

From within the giant’s form, you glanced back at the young man on the asphalt. He was staring up at you, his face a mixture of terror, relief, and deep curiosity.

The man looked incredibly familiar, though you couldn’t recall his name. You judged that he, too, must be a potential Epitome Holder.

This was your greatest frustration—possessing the memories, but only in shattered fragments. If you had the full picture, you could have cleared this world long ago.

In the time that followed, you continued your daily training and occasional monster-hunting excursions.

At the same time, you began to feel a persistent sensation whenever you eliminated an Alien Beast—the feeling that a pair of unseen eyes was watching you.

Your thoughts immediately turned to Darkness Zagi and Dark Lucifer, the two suspected masterminds.

After all, this was a world of nesting dolls.
