Honkai: Star Rail: I Can Fix This Gender-Bent World — Chapter 51
Chapter 51: Take Your Hand Off!
Just as the crowd’s fervor reached its zenith, the very air in the tavern seemed to crackle with raw energy. Countless gazes remained fixed on Seele, who had just concluded his speech, the lingering warmth of his words still connecting in the charged atmosphere.
It was in this brief, breathless moment of unity that a discordant voice shattered the illusion.
“Hey! Look over there, in the corner!”
A shrill cry, sharp as broken glass, erupted from near the entrance.
In an instant, dozens of heads snapped away from Seele. Eyes that had been filled with revolutionary fire now narrowed with suspicion, their collective gaze shooting like arrows toward Chen, who stood half-hidden in the shadows.
Under the tavern’s warm, yellow light, the uniform she wore—even with some of its more ostentatious ornaments removed—was still of a fine quality and exquisite tailoring. Set against the backdrop of dusty, threadbare work clothes, it appeared jarringly out of place. Glaring.
“Someone from the Upper District?” a man muttered, his voice a low growl.
“That outfit… and that face…” another whispered, spitting on the floor.
“How did she sneak in here?!”
“Is she a spy? Or did she come to mock us?!”
The anger, the humiliation, and the long-suppressed hostility that Seele’s speech had just ignited seemed to find a perfect, tangible outlet in that single moment. The simmering resentment now had a target.
A restless murmur rippled through the crowd. The enthusiasm that had been wholly devoted to Wildfire slogans a moment ago twisted into a potent cocktail of vigilance and animosity toward the intruder.
The scraping of wood on stone echoed through the room as several tables were shoved aside. A few burly men, their faces contorted with menacing expressions, rose to their feet and began to close in on Chen.
Chen was momentarily taken aback, not having expected to become the center of attention so suddenly. Yet, not a flicker of panic showed on her face.
She didn’t even spare the approaching men a glance. Instead, her gaze remained fixed, calm and steady, on Seele in the center of the crowd.
‘So, what will you do, Mr. Speaker?’she wondered, a silent challenge in her thoughts.’Will you yield to this fire you ignited yourself? Will you throw me out as a convenient target to unite your people?’Her eyes narrowed slightly.’Or… can you see that beneath this righteous flame, what’s truly burning might not just be the enemy, but also reason and judgment? Let me see if your flame is a blind wildfire, or a controlled furnace fire.’Seele had clearly noticed the disturbance in the corner. When his eyes landed on Chen’s face, a strange, inexplicable sense of familiarity quietly welled up in his heart.’This person… why…’he thought, a frown creasing his brow.’Why does she feel so… familiar?’
This fleeting sensation caused him to hesitate, his intended motion to intervene stalling for a critical half-second.
And it was during this half-second of hesitation that the man closest to Chen, his emotions running highest, finally reached her. His face was a mask of fury as he lunged forward, his hand shooting out to grab Chen’s slender wrist.
“You sneaky Upper District rat! Who let you in!” he roared.
Chen’s body tensed, instinct screaming at her to react, to counter. But she forced herself to suppress the impulse, her eyes still locked on Seele, as if waiting for an answer to a question only she had asked.
Just as the man’s rough, grimy fingers were about to close around her wrist—
BANG!
A piercing gunshot exploded without warning from the tavern entrance.
The bullet struck no one. Instead, it precisely grazed the tip of the burly man’s boot, slamming into the wooden floorboards just in front of his feet. The impact kicked up a small spray of dust and splinters.
The sudden, deafening report of the gun and the sharp vibration from the floor made the man snatch his hand back as if he’d been burned. He stumbled back two steps, his eyes wide with horror as he stared at the doorway.
All the clamor, all the hostility, all the movement in the tavern seemed to freeze, as if the entire scene had been struck by a pause button the moment the shot rang out.
Into the dead silence, a calm, clear young male voice reached every ear.
“Take your hand off.”
The light from the doorway was eclipsed by a figure. The hem of a Silvermane Guard commander’s cloak, pristine and white, swayed with his deliberate steps.
The young ruler held a classic flintlock pistol in one hand, his handsome face utterly devoid of expression. Only his eyes—eyes that were an almost perfect mirror of the face Chen currently wore—swept slowly across the dumbfounded crowd.
Finally, his gaze came to rest, first on the girl cornered in the back… and then on Seele, who stood in the center of the crowd, just as shocked as everyone else by this sudden, impossible turn of events.
Lord Bronya had arrived.
