Chapter 54: Beware of Laxus Falling from the Sky

There was no time to mourn over damaged blades or shattered armor.

Erza moved. A dense array of silver swords materialized in the air behind her, the signature arsenal of her Heaven’s Wheel Armor. With a sharp sweep of her hand, the floating blades ignited into streaks of lethal light, tearing through the sky straight toward the Curse of Dragon.

Before the barrage could pierce its leathery hide and turn it into a hornet’s nest, the skeletal dragon beat its wings once. Its physical form dissolved, shattering into countless motes of golden light. These glowing embers danced effortlessly through the dense storm of sword strikes, drifting higher into the atmosphere where they coalesced into a massive, dark-toned magic circle.

The sky darkened instantly. Rolling black storm clouds swallowed the sunlight, plunging the battlefield into an oppressive, suffocating gloom. Thunder cracked, rattling the eardrums of everyone present. A surging pillar of electricity crashed down from the heavens, illuminating the towering, demonic skeleton standing within the blast crater.

Summoned Skull.

Erza’s breath caught in her throat. Her expression hardened into a solemn mask. She knew this six-star monster well.

The magic circle above her flared, signaling her next re-equip, but the fiend gave her no quarter. Before the magical light could fully envelop her shapely figure, Summoned Skull unleashed its assault. The sky roared, and a blindingly thick bolt of lightning struck down with apocalyptic force.

They were old rivals. Erza’s combat instincts flared, her legs driving her to the side in a desperate blur. The lightning obliterated the exact spot she had occupied a fraction of a second prior. Dense, crackling currents exploded outward, carving a deep, charred crater into the bedrock, spiderwebbed with glowing fissures.

And the barrage had only just begun.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Relentless lightning strikes forced Erza entirely on the defensive. She poured all her focus into evasion, her speed rivaling a hurricane. To the Fairy Tail members watching safely from the sidelines, the battlefield turned into a terrifying spectacle. The Fairy Queen was reduced to a brilliant crimson streak, weaving and flickering through a literal forest of falling lightning. Wherever her boots touched, thunder roared, the earth shattered, and plumes of scorched dust rocketed into the air.

“How… how is this even possible? Is this Erza’s true strength?!” Lucy gasped, her chest heaving. The apocalyptic destruction unfolding before her eyes left her completely awestruck.

She wasn’t the only one. Even the core members who had been with the guild for years stood frozen, their eyes wide and jaws slack. Nobody had expected Chase and Erza to escalate the spar to this terrifying degree.

As for Macao, Cana, and the other seasoned veterans…

They had already demonstrated their survival instincts, quietly shuffling to the very back of the crowd and using Lucy and the other rookies as human shields. Standing at the front of this mess was just asking to get electrocuted.

“Everyone, fall back! Keep your eyes peeled for a stray Laxus falling from the sky!” Makarov stood at the very front of the group, turning his head to flash a cheeky smile while holding up a warning finger.

A crimson gale swept past him. A split second later, a stray bolt of lightning tracked the draft and struck perfectly along the Guild Master’s raised fingertip.

With a deafening crack, Makarov was instantly reduced to a smoking, charred silhouette.

“Damn it, Chase! Watch your aim!” Makarov exploded into a rage, coughing up a puff of black smoke as he shook his fist at the distant duelist.

“Oh my, oh my,” Mira giggled from the sidelines, her hands cupping her cheeks in pure amusement.

Deep within the blinding storm of electricity, Erza was pushed to the absolute brink. Finding a microscopic opening between the strikes, she finally completed the magic circle’s construction.

“Re-equip!”

Lightning detonated directly above her head, but the lethal arcs of electricity crashed against an expanding azure barrier. Her long, crimson braid whipped wildly in the resulting shockwave. Standing tall within the crater was Erza, clad in the Lightning Empress Armor, her hands wrapped tightly around the haft of the Lightning Empress Spear.

She spun the weapon in a fluid, practiced motion. Azure lightning gathered at the spear tip, crackling with volatile energy as she leveled it straight at Summoned Skull.

“Azure Lightning Cannon!”

The compressed electricity fired. It condensed into a blindingly bright magic beam that tore a trench through the air, striking dead center toward the skeletal demon.

Summoned Skull, boasting its own massive lightning resistance, didn’t dodge. It thrust a massive, clawed arm forward. using its innate mastery over thunder, the monster forcefully grabbed the beam and wrenched its trajectory off course. The Azure Lightning Cannon snapped at a harsh ninety-degree angle, piercing cleanly through a distant mountain peak before dissipating into the clouds.

“Well done,” Erza said, her lips curving into a fierce, battle-hungry smile. She offered the praise without a shred of hesitation.

Summoned Skull gave a slow, respectful nod in return. Then, the fiend raised both arms. A violent gale whipped around its skeletal frame as it began drawing in a terrifying concentration of ambient magic power.

It was charging its signature killing blow—Lightning Strike!

‘If I let him complete that attack, the Lightning Empress Armor won’t be able to absorb the full impact,’ Erza calculated, exhaling a long, steady breath. The familiar glow of re-equip magic washed over her body once more.

But before the armor could swap, the ground beneath her boots heaved violently. Massive fissures spiderwebbed across the earth in every direction, tearing the terrain apart.

From the depths of the shattered bedrock, a colossal behemoth hauled itself upward. The Giant Soldier of Stone blotted out the sun, casting a deep, suffocating shadow over the battlefield.

Erza froze, her sharp gaze piercing through the rising dust to lock onto Chase in the distance.

At his feet, the ominous black vortex of a Trap Card had materialized. It meant he had sacrificed the necessary energy to summon another monster directly to the field.

‘His casting speed for Trap Cards is significantly faster than before…’ she noted, her mind racing to identify the trap’s effect.

She had no time to ponder. A crushing wall of wind slammed down from above.

The Giant Soldier of Stone had drawn the massive rock greatsword from its shoulder. With a deafening roar, it brought the colossal weapon crashing down toward the comparatively tiny Fairy Queen.

The giant held nothing back. Its domineering physical strength pulverized the earth upon impact, kicking up a blinding tsunami of dust and debris.

“That was a ridiculously heavy blow. Did Chase actually get her?” Gray muttered, his arms crossed over his chest, his expression serious.

At some point during the chaos, the clothes he had just put back on had mysteriously vanished again, leaving him standing in nothing but a pair of desperately clinging boxers.

“Gray, your clothes,” Lucy deadpanned, pointing a trembling finger at him.

“What?! When did that rock giant’s slash get so much destructive power?!” Gray yelled, completely ignoring her.

“…You stripped them off yourself, didn’t you?!” Lucy shrieked.

Makarov ignored the peanut gallery entirely. His sharp eyes remained locked on the swirling dust cloud at the epicenter of the crater.

“No,” the Guild Master answered quietly. “Erza actually used that power against it.”

As if validating his analysis, the Giant Soldier of Stone’s stoic expression suddenly shifted. The behemoth, which had just delivered a seemingly lethal strike, looked down to find its massive stone sword—and its entire right arm—covered in rapidly expanding fractures.

With a deep, resonant hum, the giant’s arm exploded into a shower of gravel!

Boulders rained down, crashing harmlessly against the massive twin shields of the Adamantine Armor.

Behind the heavy barricade, crimson hair fluttered in the wind. Electric arcs danced across the metal, illuminating Erza’s sharp, unyielding eyes.

The Giant Soldier of Stone’s shock lasted only a fraction of a second. Reacting with brutal efficiency, it grabbed the crumbling hilt of its greatsword with its remaining left hand. Gripping it in reverse, the giant swung the weapon in a devastating horizontal arc, carving a violent gale straight toward Erza’s flank.

Erza’s eyes narrowed. She dropped into a low crouch the exact millisecond the colossal blade swept over her. The jagged stone edge shaved past her face, the resulting shockwave clipping a single lock of her crimson hair.

She anchored her boots into the dirt. A blinding white light flared in her right hand, her counterattack launching the moment the blade passed.

A glint of cold steel flashed, pulverizing the floating debris around her.

Erza let out a fierce battle cry, her arm muscles coiling as she hurled the Giant’s Armor’s De-Spelling Spear with terrifying velocity. The projectile tore through the air, piercing straight through the Giant Soldier of Stone’s torso with unstoppable momentum. Without losing a fraction of its speed, the spear carried a shrieking gale as it blew out the giant’s back and struck Summoned Skull directly in the chest!
