Chapter 100: Encounter

The descent from the tenth to the twelfth floor plunged them into the infamous Mist Maze.

Thick, unnatural fog hung heavy in the damp air, swallowing the glow of the phosphorescent moss and reducing visibility to mere arm’s lengths. In this oppressive whiteout, Hyacine proved very useful. Standing near the center of their formation, she coaxed a continuous, gentle breeze from her fingertips. The currents swirled outward, carving a crisp sphere of clarity through the dense vapor and granting the team just enough breathing room to handle the treacherous paths.

Passing through the final threshold of the twelfth floor, they crossed the boundary line that separated the upper reaches from the true dangers of the middle levels.

The moment they set foot on the thirteenth floor, the environment shifted with jarring abruptness. The damp, misty caverns gave way to a claustrophobic expanse of hardened bedrock. The architecture of the Dungeon twisted into an complex, maddening network of crisscrossing tunnels, resembling the hollowed-out veins of a colossal anthill.

Pressing forward with steady momentum, they carved their way deeper, soon arriving at the fifteenth floor. The ambient air here felt noticeably heavier, thick with the scent of stagnant dust and lurking malice. The monsters spawned in these depths eclipsed everything on the previous floors in both sheer numbers and raw ferocity.

Just as the group stepped into the center of a sprawling, multi-tiered crossroads, the bedrock beneath their boots heaved violently.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed from the left and right tunnels simultaneously, striking the cavern walls like the relentless beating of a war drum.

From the left corridor, hulking figures breached the shadows. Several Mitachurls, towering over three meters tall with thick, knotted muscles bulging beneath dark fur, charged forward. They dragged massive axes behind them, the heavy iron blades roaring with unnatural, raging flames that scorched the stone floor.

From the right corridor, over a dozen Kairagi advanced with terrifying discipline. Dressed in the tattered, battle-worn armor of fallen samurai, they moved in a steady, synchronized march, their dual blades already drawn and wreathed in searing fire.

Deep within the darkened tunnels behind the vanguard, the unmistakable silhouettes of Hilichurls shifted into position, drawing back the bowstrings of their crude weapons.

These were not natural denizens of the Dungeon. They were anomalies, entities born directly from Noah’s unique skills, creatures that had no right to exist in this world. Yet here they were, their glowing crimson eyes locking onto the four adventurers with singular, murderous intent.

It was a perfectly orchestrated ambush. They were completely surrounded.

“Hyacine, Robin, get behind me.”

Noah kept his voice low and perfectly calm, stepping forward to form a vanguard line with Tifa.

The moment the command left his lips, a brilliant flash of light ignited within Robin’s emerald eyes. An invisible, telepathic network snapped into existence, weaving smoothly through the consciousness of all four members. The chaotic layout of the battlefield, the minute muscle twitches of the approaching monsters, and the tactical intentions of her allies flooded into everyone’s minds with crystal clarity. It was a flawless, omniscient perspective of the battle—the absolute domain of the Harmony Family.

“Hyacine, leave the three Kairagi on the left flank to me. The right flank is yours,” Robin’s voice echoed directly through the mental link, cool and authoritative.

“Understood.”

Hyacine responded instantly, her pink twin-tails tracing a graceful arc through the stagnant air as she spun into position. Raising her hands, she called upon her magic. Mana Burst. Surging magical energy violently displaced the surrounding air, whipping up a howling gale that condensed into a high-speed, rotating barrier around her. The swirling wind deflected a sudden volley of flaming arrows launched from the shadows, sending them clattering harmlessly against the bedrock.

Without breaking her stance, she flicked her wrists. Several highly compressed, solid blades of wind shrieked through the cavern, slicing precisely into the vanguard of the right-flank Kairagi and forcing them to cross their flaming swords in defense, effectively stalling their advance.

At the center, the frontal clash erupted.

The Mitachurls unleashed deafening, guttural roars, throwing their massive weight forward as they swung their blazing giant axes in wide, devastating arcs.

Tifa dropped her center of gravity, moving with the lethal, silent grace of a black cat. She slipped through the lethal gap between two sweeping axes and murmured a single word. “Shine.”

Activating her supplementary magic, Meteor Feather, a dazzling aura of pure starlight ignited around her fists and boots. She pivoted on her heel, driving a starlight-infused whip kick directly into the exposed side of a charging Kairagi. The sheer kinetic force of the blow shattered its armor, sending the samurai rocketing backward to crash into the ranks of its advancing comrades.

A few paces away, Noah met the crushing overhead swing of a Mitachurl head-on. He raised his Fire Spirit longsword, catching the blazing giant axe in a grinding lock. Sparks showered over the bedrock as the harsh shriek of colliding metal echoed through the cavern.

In that split second of deadlock, a lone Kairagi seized the opening. Barking a harsh battle cry, the samurai blurred into motion, bypassing the frontline entirely at astonishing speed to launch a lethal thrust at Hyacine’s exposed back.

Robin’s sharp warning flared through the mental link.

Noah’s eyes narrowed. He did not even bother to look over his shoulder.

“With this wheel of flame as my chariot.”

The ultra-short incantation left his lips, and a pillar of scorching fire erupted from his very skin. Ever-burning Flame, Stage One. The sudden ignition of power pushed his physical limits to the absolute brink. Leaving nothing but a burning afterimage in his wake, Noah vanished from the axe-lock and materialized directly beside the flanking Kairagi.

But a simple interception was never his goal.

“In the depths of my heart’s lake, Ripples of the Past emerge.” Noah raised his free hand, his voice cutting through the roar of the flames. “Gospel.”

Recreating the devastating magic of Alfia, an invisible, highly compressed sphere of sonic energy condensed in the palm of his hand. The moment it formed, he flooded the construct with the raging heat of his Ever-burning Flame. The volatile fusion of pure sound and raw fire mutated into a visible, crimson shockwave that warped the very air around it.

The Flame Cannon detonated.

The blast struck the ambushing Kairagi point-blank. Violent flames and crushing sound waves swallowed the samurai whole, reducing its armor and flesh to drifting ash before it could even draw breath to scream. The residual shockwave tore down the tunnel, carrying enough kinetic fury to blast two trailing Kairagi off their feet and slam them into the cavern walls.

“Tifa, the Kairagi are yours,” Noah commanded, his tone entirely devoid of panic as he turned his blazing sword back toward the recovering Mitachurls.

“No problem.”

Tifa acknowledged the shift in tactics, the starlight around her limbs flaring with blinding intensity. Abandoning her evasive footwork, she launched herself like a falling star directly into the heart of the Kairagi formation.

Her fists became a blur of lethal precision. Every strike tore through the air with a sharp whistle, landing with bone-shattering impact. A Kairagi raised its dual blades to guard, but Tifa’s iron fist punched straight through the defense, imprinting deeply into its chest plate. Starlight exploded from the point of impact, and the monster was thrown backward, spitting dark blood as its ribs caved in.

Another samurai lunged from her blind spot, swinging a fiery blade at her neck. Tifa dropped low, spinning her body into a gorgeous, sweeping high kick that tracked the perfect trajectory of a falling meteor. Her heel connected solidly with the side of the monster’s masked head. Bone snapped cleanly, and the Kairagi collapsed into dust.

From the rear, Robin maintained her absolute control over the battlefield flow. Tracking a cluster of Kairagi struggling against Hyacine’s wind pressure, she raised a hand and chanted. “Echo.”

Activating Wingbeat of the White Sound, invisible, highly penetrating sonic ripples lanced across the cavern. The targeted Kairagi convulsed as the sound waves struck their inner ears, their movements stalling completely. It was a microscopic window of vulnerability, but it was all Tifa needed to close the distance and shatter their ranks.

The chaotic melee had transformed into a flawless, grinding machine of execution.

Noah stood as an immovable wall of fire, suppressing the berserk Mitachurls through sheer overwhelming force. Every time his longsword met their axes, the hulking beasts were thrown off balance, their brute strength entirely negated. Tifa danced through the Kairagi, a storm of martial destruction leaving nothing but fading ash in her wake. Robin dictated the tempo from the rear, her telepathic commands and sonic magic weaving the team into a single organism, while Hyacine’s relentless gales protected their blind spots and bled the enemies of their momentum.

In less than ten minutes, the slaughter reached its conclusion.

Noah stepped inside the guard of the final Mitachurl, driving his blazing blade through its thick chest. At the exact same moment, Tifa’s starlight-wreathed fist pierced the armor of the last standing Kairagi.

The massive horde of anomalous middle-level monsters dissolved into black ash, leaving the scarred bedrock littered with gleaming magic stones and scattered drop items.

The cavern fell silent, save for the heavy breathing of the girls and the faint, lingering crackle of dying flames. The air was thick with the acrid stench of ozone and scorched stone.

Noah lowered his sword, his calm gaze sweeping over Tifa, Robin, and Hyacine. He noted the slight tremors in their hands and the sheen of sweat on their brows. The mental and physical toll of the sudden, high-intensity ambush was obvious.

“Let’s go back,” Noah said, making the final call.
