Arknights: The Holy Son's Leisurely Life — Chapter 2
Chapter 2: The Dragon and the Tiger
To put it bluntly, Lucian was a transmigrator.
Unlike most of his peers in the same bizarre situation, his original memories were little more than a hazy fog. He understood abstract concepts like ‘Earth’and’humans’—ideas that simply did not exist in this world—but he knew absolutely nothing about his own personal history. The only anchor he had to his past was his name: Lucian.
According to his own scattered knowledge, this condition was called dissociative amnesia.
Unburdened by the ghost of a past life, Lucian easily accepted his new reality, perfectly content to drift wherever the wind took him. In this life, he had been born as a Sankta, a race commonly known to the rest of Terra as ‘Angels’.
The very moment he first opened his eyes as an infant, he was greeted by a circle of solemn older women, all sporting glowing halos above their heads.
Naturally, his instincts took over, and he blurted out his very first words: “Am I in heaven?”
It was a well-known fact that the signature halo and wings of a Sankta manifested the moment they spoke their first words. Usually, a baby started with ‘mama’or’dada’. For someone to casually ask about their current geographical location right out of the gate was entirely unmatched.
Perhaps because of this bizarre awakening, his fellow tribesmen panicked, resulting in a chaotic commotion that the infant Lucian didn’t quite understand.
Eventually, the dust settled, and he embraced his new identity. He was a Sankta, born in the sacred nation of Laterano. It was one of the few countries on Terra that maintained an ironclad, unyielding faith, advocating for the inner path of sainthood while keeping the rest of the world at arm’s length.
To Lucian, the sheer rigidity of it all felt suffocating.
So, after enduring a few years of strict dogma and waiting for the perfect opportunity, he packed his bags and escaped Laterano with his childhood sweetheart, completely liberating himself in the process.
Now, he was just a humble employee of Penguin Logistics. A Sankta, and nothing more.
Therefore, no matter who interrogated him, or how many times they asked, his answer remained exactly the same.
“My name is Lucian, and I won’t change it!” He leaned back in the cold metal chair, crossing his arms. “I am a law-abiding employee of a legitimate logistics company, and I have the right to remain silent until my lawyer arrives. Oh, by the way, I’m a bit hungry. Do you guys offer pork cutlet rice here?”
The woman across the interrogation table slammed her hands down, the sharp sound echoing off the bare walls. “Luc, you had better start taking this seriously!”
Madam Ch’en, the young, fiercely promising Senior Superintendent of the Lungmen Guard Department, was practically vibrating with fury. Her small, delicate fists—which were more than capable of shattering a solid oak desk—trembled as she glared at the man’s unapologetic antics.
She snatched up a printed photograph from the surveillance footage and slapped it repeatedly against the table. “The evidence is conclusive! We have the video saved! You not only caused a large-scale traffic accident through reckless driving, but you also flagrantly violated Lungmen’s weapon control regulations! And this is the third time this month! You are a repeat offender!”
“I’m innocent, Officer,” Lucian replied, completely uncooperative. He swayed lazily in his chair, the glowing halo above his head wobbling frivolously with the motion. “I am merely a law-abiding citizen who was being chased by armed terrorists. I only sped up a little bit for my own self-preservation. That counts as self-defense, right? And accusing me of violating weapon control regulations is just factually incorrect. Putting aside the fact that Sankta are legally permitted to own Guardian Guns, the weapon I used was just a toy I tinkered together myself. It only fires toy bullets. I even submitted it to your department for appraisal, didn’t I?”
Right on cue, a junior police officer standing nervously by the door humbly raised a hand. “Madam Ch’en… he’s right. The forensics report just came back. It truly is a toy gun…”
“What kind of toy gun can single-handedly subdue dozens of heavily armed terrorists?!” Ch’en’s blood pressure spiked so high she saw spots. She snatched the appraisal report from the junior officer’s hands and tore it to shreds.
Ever since Lucian joined Penguin Logistics a few years ago, Ch’en had seen countless reports exactly like this one.
This infuriating man possessed a terrifying aptitude for crafting heavy firearms—a feat that even Terra’s most renowned manufacturer, Raythean Industries, couldn’t easily replicate. But the most maddening part was that the guns he built could only be operated by him, and the ammunition consisted entirely of self-made, non-lethal rounds. Coupled with the Sankta race’s legal immunity regarding firearms, he perfectly, flawlessly evaded every single legal sanction Lungmen could throw at him.
It was a brilliant legal loophole, but it was incredibly detrimental to Madam Ch’en’s cardiovascular health.
The beautiful, highly capable Senior Superintendent took a few slow, deep breaths. For the time being, she forced herself to sit back down, rubbing her temples wearily.
“Thanks to Penguin Logistics, those arms dealers were apprehended the moment they arrived at the port,” Ch’en admitted, her voice tight. “For that, I am grateful to you. But this was originally the Lungmen Guard Department’s jurisdiction, not something a private logistics company should be handling. I swear, you, surnamed Luc…”
“Ah, hold on a moment, Madam Ch’en.” Lucian raised a hand, his expression suddenly turning deadpan and serious. “Let me reiterate. My surname is not Luc. My full name is Lucian, which translates to ‘rose’in the old Laterano dialect. It’s just like how the common Ursus name’Ryazan’doesn’t mean their surname is Liang. You wouldn’t want people calling you’Big Sister’ on the street, would you?”
“Guh!” Ch’en let out a strangled cry of distress, looking exactly as if she had just taken a physical punch to the stomach.
Her eye twitched violently as she glared up at him. “Lucian, you truly are a prodigy at making my blood boil. Do you dislike me that much? Robbing me of my sleep, forcing me to work overtime in the middle of the night just to take your statements—what exactly do you get out of this?”
Lucian leaned forward, his face the picture of earnest sincerity. “Being able to monopolize Madam Ch’en’s late-night hours all to myself? I’d say I’ve already surpassed every other man in Lungmen.”
Outside the interrogation room, the male officers of the Lungmen Guard Department—who were already far too familiar with Lucian’s antics—nodded vigorously through the glass, staring at him with raw, unfiltered envy.
Just as Ch’en’s beautiful face was about to puff up like a steamed bun from sheer indignation, the heavy doors of the Lungmen Guard Department were pushed open. A refined, yet unmistakably loud voice echoed down the hall.
“Lucian! Where is Lucian from Penguin Logistics? Someone is here to bail you out! Get out here!”
“I’m here, I’m here.” Lucian slipped out of the interrogation room, handling the halls of the Guard Department with the casual ease of a man walking through his own living room.
He trotted over to the entrance and smiled at the loud-voiced female officer waiting for him. “Miss Swire, I’m so sorry for always troubling you, guh—pfft!”
Before he could even finish his greeting, his face was aggressively squished by the woman in front of him.
Standing a full head shorter than him, Swire rose up on her tiptoes. Her two cool, delicate hands ruthlessly kneaded his cheeks like dough as she let out a heavy, exasperated sigh.
“I’m telling you right now, Lucian. Say what you just said to Ch’en a minute ago, but say it to me. Your surname isn’t Luc, and my name isn’t just a title. Call me Swire, or Lady Swire.”
“I think it’s a bit problematic for ordinary citizens to go around calling police officers ‘Lady’, don’t you?” Lucian gently took hold of Swire’s wrists, though he didn’t pull her hands away. “I just feel that calling you by your surname is a bit too formal. But ‘Officer Swire’ is a mouthful. Couldn’t we use a different address?”
“Is that so?” Swire didn’t seem to mind him holding her hands in the slightest. The fluffy, striped tiger ears atop her head twitched with amusement. “Then call me Beatrix. That’s my real name. You can even affectionately call me Bea… but if you dare to actually call me that in public, you had better be prepared for the consequences. If you use it as a joke, I’ll kill you.”
Lucian immediately released her wrists, his expression turning solemn. “Understood perfectly, Young Lady Swire.”
Seeing the notoriously shameless Lucian actually back down, the surrounding police officers watching the spectacle immediately erupted into a chorus of boos, showing their unified disdain for him, regardless of gender.
Lucian and Swire’s banter didn’t sound like the conversation of two strangers. For Swire, a high-ranking Senior Superintendent, to initiate such intimate physical contact with a suspect in front of her own subordinates… even a blind man could see their relationship was far from ordinary.
Yet, no one in the precinct found it strange.
It was the worst-kept secret in the Lungmen Guard Department: Superintendent Swire was actively pursuing Lucian.
The two pillars of the Guard Department—the ‘Dragon’Madam Ch’en, and the’Tiger’ Swire—were famous for their constant “Dragon and Tiger Battles.” They were both absolute, top-tier beauties, untouchable flowers resting at the very peak of Lungmen’s hierarchy. Many young men joined the force solely out of admiration for them, but no one ever dared to actually cross the line and pursue them.
And yet, Lucian, a mere employee of a civilian logistics company, casually brushed shoulders with both of them. Their comedic, highly charged interactions had become legendary scenes within the station.
Leaving aside who was actually taking advantage of whom, Swire was the one who made her stance the clearest.
She continued to rub Lucian’s cheek with one hand while using the other to slap the bail release slip against his chest. “Same old routine. Someone wants to see you. Don’t be late, alright?”
Lucian offered a mock salute. “Understood. Thank you for your continued patronage, Young Lady. By the way… do you really enjoy playing with my face this much?”
Swire nodded generously, her amber eyes gleaming. “Yes, I like it very much. It’s soft and smooth, like a fresh glutinous rice ball. Is the skin of all you Sankta people this ridiculously good? It’s practically cheating!”
Lucian’s face fell into a mask of pure innocence. “It’s no use complaining to me. How about this? Next time, I’ll sneak into the dorms and steal the expensive skincare products Exusiai uses to show you—Ow, ow, ow! Why are you pinching me so hard, Officer Swire?!”
Swire’s grip tightened like a vice. “What. Do. You. Think?”
With her striped fur bristling, Swire was no longer just a fierce tigress; she had fully evolved into a jealous demoness.
