Arknights: How Did I Actually Become the Doctor? — Chapter 47
Chapter 47: Checking in at the Iconic Scene!
Jesselton Miller brimmed with absolute confidence.
The only mild disappointment gnawing at him was the caliber of his current prey. The suicidal wave of assassins had successfully flushed out the rats attempting a prison break, but the legendary Saria—the prize he had been anticipating for so long—was nowhere to be seen.
Instead, he was left staring at a pathetic motley crew. Aside from a defecting little assassin whose loyalties were as muddled as her head, the rest of the lineup was laughable. A shockingly frail white-haired youth, a painfully average prison guard, a stunningly beautiful white-haired woman who looked like a fragile porcelain vase, and… a little white animal?
‘Is this some kind of traveling circus?’
Jesselton shook his immaculately styled head in sheer disappointment. A persistent, prickling sensation at the back of his neck warned him he was being watched from the shadows, but as he surveyed this ridiculous escape team, he forcefully dismissed the absurd paranoia. Even if some undetectable master were lurking in the dark, they would never stoop to using such low-quality bait.
It was a matter of basic dignity for a powerhouse of his caliber.
High above in the suffocating gloom of the rafters, Wis’adel’s sniper barrel swept in a slow, lethal arc. The crosshairs hovered over Jesselton’s skull for a fleeting second before snapping sharply back to rest right on Duq’arael’s temple.
‘…Duq’arael, why the hell are you sticking so close to him?’
Down below, the self-proclaimed genius undercover agent—currently tasked with closely guarding the Doctor—remained blissfully oblivious to the sniper’s murderous glare. To pull off this flawless infiltration, the ancient Sanguinarch had thoroughly exhausted thousands of years of straight-male aesthetic sensibilities. He had spent an entire night obsessively pouring over the Doctor’s psychological profiles, ultimately deciding on a blindingly bright red, dangerously high-slit qipao paired with a ribbon-laced top full of strategic cutouts.
As he ran, the sheer fabric fluttered, revealing tantalizing glimpses of flawless, snow-white skin, perfectly weaponizing the Sanguinarch’s racial advantages to invite the wildest of imaginations.
Unfortunately for the ancient vampire… the Doctor’s mind was completely, utterly hijacked by the fluffy, extra-large feline running beside them. The breathtakingly seductive display was entirely wasted on the Doctor, leaving only Wis’adel in the shadows to suffer the view.
“Go fuck yourself!” Wis’adel spat a vicious string of Sarkaz profanity under her breath.
Mountain’s massive hands were still bound by heavy iron shackles. The towering feline hunched his broad shoulders in a mix of awkwardness and embarrassment as he trailed behind the frail youth, sprinting down a metallic corridor that felt far too narrow for his massive frame. Even while running for his life, Mountain tried to reason with his impulsive savior.
“Sir, I carry a heavy burden of hatred on my shoulders. I truly do not wish for a kind soul like you to be dragged into this violent turmoil on my account…”
He knew his presence was a magnet for disaster; remaining locked in his cell had been a deliberate choice to avoid implicating innocent bystanders. He had spent years quietly cultivating his temperament behind bars, living a perfectly stable life. Then, out of nowhere, this bizarre group had stormed his block, shouting beyond understanding nonsense about maxing out bonds, forcibly ripped his cell door off its hinges, and dragged him into the chaos!
The white-haired youth leading the charge was currently hauling the frail little raccoon girl by one hand and the shattered iron chain of Mountain’s cuffs by the other. A stunning, scantily-clad mature woman trailed closely behind them. The youth looked entirely too thrilled.
“Charge, my main tank! Go, Tiger Vanguard!”
Mountain fell silent for a long moment. Deciding it was easier to just play along, he let out two deep, rumbling “Awoo” sounds to appease the eccentric youth. Simultaneously, he used his massive, bound arms to shield his single-minded savior, effortlessly batting away two opportunistic prisoners who had tried to swarm them in the confusion.
Though this youth’s arrival was abrupt and fiercely self-centered, Mountain possessed a crystal-clear moral compass. He was surprised, yes, but he could never bring himself to feel anger toward someone trying to save him. It was simply that the blood debt he carried was far too heavy. He refused to let anyone else die for him.
Suddenly, the languid atmosphere around Duq’arael vanished. The Sanguinarch’s crimson eyes flashed with a bone-chilling coldness as he finally made his move.
Clang!
A blood crystal dagger, no larger than a man’s finger, materialized in his grip. With terrifying precision, it struck the absolute weakest point of Jesselton’s incoming blade. Using the warden’s own kinetic force against him, Duq’arael executed a masterful flick of his wrist, violently jarring Jesselton’s arm and forcing the arrogant man to stumble half a step backward.
Hampered by his ridiculous disguise, Duq’arael couldn’t unleash even a fraction of his true strength. But against thousands of years of slaughter and battlefield experience, Jesselton was nothing more than a fledgling bird stumbling out of the nest.
Jesselton’s eyes widened in subconscious shock. ‘Have they been hiding their true strength this entire time?’
Fortunately for Jesselton’s fragile ego, the very next moment, the white-haired youth let out a highly exaggerated, theatrical gasp. “Ah! There’s poison in the air!”
It seemed the toxic smoke Jesselton had deployed was finally taking effect. The youth collapsed limply to the floor like a puppet with its strings cut. The little white creature beside him stiffened comically before slowly tipping over and collapsing as well.
Saria’s combat instincts flared. She immediately moved to rush forward and protect the Doctor, but a sudden tug on her pant leg stopped her cold. She glanced down to see the unconscious youth frantically gesturing for her to hit the deck.
‘…’Saria stared at him. The boss had given an order. What else was there to say?’The invincible Saria has fallen!’ she thought, metaphorically weeping on the inside as she dropped rigidly to the floor.
Mountain, however, was genuinely shocked. As the only honest person on the entire battlefield, he was the only one actually succumbing to the neurotoxin. His protective instincts screamed at him to step in front of Jesselton, but his massive body betrayed him. A wave of debilitating weakness washed over his muscles; after taking just two staggering steps, his legs gave out, and he crashed heavily to the floor.
Duq’arael blinked, his ancient mind rapidly processing the situation. Right, his genius undercover persona. As a normal, fragile woman, he should definitely be unconscious right now. Suppressing a tidal wave of murderous intent, the Sanguinarch smoothly retracted his blood crystal dagger. Without expending much effort, he gracefully slumped against the cold metal wall, striking a picture-perfect pose of a delicate maiden who had just fainted.
In the blink of an eye, Robin turned around to find the corridor completely empty behind her. An entire row of people was just lying motionless on the floor.
Robin stared in utter bewilderment. ‘Is this anesthetic… really that effective? Can I beat Jesselton? Will I win? Can I actually win?’
Honestly, Jesselton was even more confused than Robin. This specific neurotoxin was formulated exclusively to subdue prisoners. Why on earth did the prison guard pass out too? Pushing the baffling anomaly aside, Jesselton quickly rationalized the situation. These people simply had pathetically low drug resistance.
Reassuming the haughty posture of a guaranteed victor, Jesselton stepped forward, his voice dripping with slow, venomous manipulation as he aimed for the psychological killing blow. “Miss Robin, kill him. You must be truly desperate for that money, aren’t you?” He gestured toward the paralyzed feline. “Do you know the truth? Your father’s company was driven into absolute bankruptcy because of Simon Co.”
If this were the Robin from an hour ago, she might have frozen, paralyzed by a sudden sense of betrayal and grief. But having just listened to the Doctor’s thorough, preemptive explanation of the conspiracy, only one fiery thought burned in her mind.
‘You still have the absolute gall to say that to my face!’
She knew exactly how Simon Co. had been framed and dismantled. What a sickeningly hypocritical face! Without a second of hesitation, Robin gathered her trap ropes and throwing daggers, charging furiously at the warden.
A brief, violent clash ensued. Robin was brutally beaten back, skidding across the floor.
But then, a massive shadow loomed over her. Mountain forced himself up! Pushing his paralyzed muscles past their absolute limits through sheer force of will, the towering feline stood tall, executing a beautiful, seamless tag-team maneuver with Robin.
“I am deeply sorry, little girl,” Mountain rumbled between heavy strikes. “Your father’s bankruptcy… it was indeed the responsibility of Simon Co.”
“Please don’t say that, sir!” Robin shouted back, throwing a volley of daggers to cover his flank. “I already understand the truth. I know you are just as innocent in all of this!”
The two exchanged rapid-fire opinions in the breathless gaps of their battle, instantly resolving their manufactured contradictions and forging a genuine bond of camaraderie on the battlefield!
And then, despite their teamwork, the two were brutally beaten back once again.
“That is quite enough, Jesselton.”
Finally, Saria couldn’t stomach the farce a second longer. Saria stepped out!
Amidst the collective shock of everyone present—though nobody was actually shocked—Saria reached up and tore off her guard mask, revealing her iconic, resolutely sharp profile to the dim prison lights.
“It is you. You finally came!” Jesselton’s eyes widened in a mix of deep surprise and manic delight. He threw his head back and laughed aloud, the sound echoing off the steel walls. “Saria! I have been waiting for you for a very long time!”
Saria furrowed her brows, genuinely puzzled by his theatrical outburst. “You were waiting for me? Are you afraid of me, or are you just trying to get to know me?”
Jesselton’s lips curled into a composed, impeccably gentlemanly smile. “No, no, no. You seem to have misunderstood something here, Director Saria—no, just Saria now.”
He offered a slight, mocking bow, his tone dripping with arrogant admiration as he proudly displayed the sleek mechanical augmentations grafted onto his body to the bewildered Vouivre.
“I heard a rumor that your Arts and combat abilities are somewhat similar to mine. Yet, I was unceremoniously turned away by you before we ever had the chance to trade blows.” He slowly drew his weapon, his eyes burning with a dark, obsessive competitive fire. “For a very long time, I have harbored a small, nagging doubt about whether you are truly stronger than me.”
He pointed his blade directly at her.
“Now, step over my body, or remain here forever with the hollow honor of your first half of life!”
