Arknights: How Did I Actually Become the Doctor? — Chapter 41

July 22, 2026 Calculating...

Chapter 41: Checking Out the Treasure Operators My Past Self Left Behind… Wait, Oh No!

After the two of them had spent what felt like an eternity testing the waters with completely irrelevant, mind-numbing nonsense, Silence finally reached a breaking point.

Good news: The upper management of Rhodes Island was incredibly harmonious. Perhaps a bit too harmonious, to the point where they functioned more like a traveling comedy troupe than a paramilitary pharmaceutical company.

Bad news: Who on Terra ever claimed the future of Rhodes Island was pitch black and uncertain? Under the leadership of this specific management team, wasn’t it blatantly obvious at a single glance that they were completely doomed?

“Sorry, Mr. Ghost of Babel, but I really don’t want to know the exact details of how Kal’tsit and Amiya competed to pry Mon3tr out of a crack in the door!” Silence snapped, her usual reserved demeanor cracking. “And you are clearly just inserting your own personal bias to spout absolute nonsense!”

“Doctor, please do something productive for once!” The feathers on Silence’s head visibly ruffled, puffing up from sheer exasperation as they trembled slightly in the sterile air of the medical ward.

It wasn’t until Silence’s nervous tension had been mostly washed away by sheer, unadulterated speechlessness that you finally dropped the act. You leaned back, your tone shifting to a slow, measured drawl. “I heard you’ve been investigating intelligence on Mansfield State Prison recently?”

If your gamer memory served you right, the plot of the Mansfield Break event was scheduled to kick off within the next few days.

What? You’re a story-skipper who doesn’t remember the exact lore? No worries. You definitely remembered Jesselton, the absolute clown of a boss who gets folded in three punches, right?

Columbia. A technologically advanced emerging nation, the undisputed leader in modern Terran technology. While the Ursus Empire was still busy whipping slave miners in the frozen tundra, Columbia’s megacorps had already wiped out rival corporate families through cutthroat market competition! The gap between the eras was glaringly evident, even if rampant hyper-capitalism didn’t exactly seem like a good thing.

And then there was Mountain. One of the original six-star phantom gods, the ultimate early-lane carry for beginners, and the undisputed protagonist of the famous community saying: ‘Each generation has its own meta gods, but Mountain guards the blue box every generation.’ He was a core pillar for AFK trust-farm strats to this day, a true furry gentleman, and the exact protagonist of the corporate bloodbath example you just thought of.

Following the total collapse of Simon Co. in a brutal corporate struggle, Mountain—the young master of the Anthony family—was sent to a maximum-security prison to avoid the ensuing disaster.

And now, deep within Rhine Lab, internal intrigue was boiling over. Three major factions—Muelsyse, Saria, and Hydebro—were surging with undercurrents, with Hydebro actively attempting to completely eradicate the lingering threat of the Simon family. They were planning to assassinate Mountain right inside his cell. Meanwhile, the other factions, each acting on their own hidden agendas, were scrambling to gather intelligence, spy on their colleagues, or attempt to uphold some twisted sense of justice by breaking him out.

As the number one universal support faction on this land and a super charitable organization that basically worked for free everywhere, Rhodes Island naturally had countless people trying to drag you into the mess.

Silence possessed the fourfold identity of a conscientious researcher, a Rhine Lab escapee, a Rhodes Island operator, and a Liberi. Her getting involved in this chaotic turmoil was as natural as breathing!

Of course, your personal reason for joining this little prison break journey was absolutely, definitely not just to witness Jesselton’s legendary three-punch humiliation scene in person. Right?

Silence was suddenly called out on her highly classified plan. She instinctively flinched, but her posture—having just spent the last ten minutes complaining about your terrible jokes—was far too relaxed. She didn’t even have the emotional buildup required to get properly defensive. “You… how did you know?”

At a time like this, no matter how you tried to explain it, and no matter how coincidental it might seem, it would inevitably arouse the deep-seated suspicion of a former researcher who lived like a bird startled by the mere twang of a bowstring, constantly suffering from persecution paranoia.

So, you chose the coolest possible way to handle it.

You tossed your hood back and struck a dramatic chuunibyou pose, planting one hand firmly on your hip. “Who am I?! I am the legendary Ghost of Babel, the ruthless mastermind behind the scenes, the all-knowing Prophet, the wielder of the Echo of Wisdom, the legendary Terra white-hair-loving Doctor!”

Wake up, man, there isn’t enough room in this room for all those titles to stand at once.

Your sudden sharpness was genuinely chilling, but the sheer embarrassing heat you radiated whenever you had one of these gamer episodes balanced it out quite nicely.

In the end, Silence was left completely dizzy by your circular talking. She honestly spilled her entire plan, lost whatever bottom line she had left, and agreed to cover for you. After promising to help deceive Kal’tsit and temporarily hand over operational command, you finally let her go.

Even better, before she hurried out, she completely forgot to notify the Medical Department operators that your physical examination was finished. That meant before the medics could rush over to drag you back to bed, you had at least half an hour of glorious free time.

Without a second of delay, you walked quickly and calmly toward the main elevator, heading all the way down to the highly restricted lower-level confinement observation room of Rhodes Island. You even made sure to politely nod and greet the operators you passed along the way. Nobody could tell at all that you had actually just snuck out of the infirmary.

Let’s see what kind of massive treasure operators my past self left behind in the basement! It’s probably just a Royal Court level Sarkaz, right? Not scared at all! If you dare to recruit them, I dare to use them!

The elevator descended rapidly, the floor numbers ticking down into the negatives. Filled with confident, gacha-pulling expectations, you stepped out into the pitch-black lower levels of the landship.

The heavy, lead-lined protective doors hissed open, layer by agonizing layer. The surroundings were suffocatingly dark, with only the occasional flash of cold blue light indicating that unknown, high-tech instruments were still actively monitoring the containment cells.

“Dr. ■■, you really did come back.”

The hoarse voice echoed through the corridor. It carried a sickening, uncomfortable wave of static interference that made your vision blur and your head spin the moment it brushed against your eardrums.

Wait, which Sarkaz Royal Court Lord is this? I can’t place the voice!

Your heart suddenly skipped a beat. A cold sweat broke out on your neck. It felt exactly like you had just walked blindly into a trap set by your amnesiac past self.

The next moment, a towering, pitch-black figure—existing somewhere in the horrifying space between physical reality and a waking hallucination—slowly twisted into shape behind the reinforced glass. When it spoke again, its voice distorted violently, shrieking like a broken air-raid siren.

“Forgive me for still not being able to catch up to your level after all these years… only able to appear before you in this kind of Collapsal state.” The shadowy entity shifted, its form glitching. “Tell me… is my Leithanien doing well?”

Damn it! Damn it all!

You wanted to scream. You should have realized it earlier when you heard Patriot talking about your past meetings!

What kind of utterly insane person ignores the Sarkaz borders and the main storyline just to go grind the Sami roguelike every single day?!

How the hell did your past self manage to bring back Herkunftshorn?! And an Altered Collapsal version of The Witch King at that?!

Can you even take this thing out of the basement and use it openly without triggering an international incident?!
