Arknights: How Did I Actually Become the Doctor? — Chapter 30

July 22, 2026 Calculating...

Chapter 30: EW Is Just So Useful!

“Patriot actually knows he cannot refuse me. His decision to take the Yetis and leave immediately was meant to make me give up on adding this pair of ill-fated father and daughter to my collection, simply because tracking them would be too much trouble.”

I used the boiled snow water to rehydrate a block of compressed dried fruit—a parting gift Amiya had absolutely insisted I take before she left—and explained the situation while struggling to bite into the tough military rations.

“When he realized I was willing to go through so much trouble just to catch him, he already knew the ending.”

Much like a famous round-headed octogenarian from my past life, Patriot was currently acting like a cat backed onto a high shelf, hissing defensively as he retreated.

The only difference was that the old Wendigo was a bit smarter. He shouldn’t try to fight me to the bitter end, right?

He shouldn’t… right?

“Doctor, the moisture content in the air is increasing rapidly, and the ambient heat waveform is completely abnormal. I suspect a large-scale thermal weapon is being prepared.” A Pythia operator suddenly flicked her tail in deep unease, issuing a sharp warning across the comms.

Almost immediately, she overturned her own conclusion.

“No, the waveform isn’t as stable as a machine’s output. It is more like… Originium Arts! An Infected’s Originium Arts!”

Frostleaf gripped the long handle of her battle axe, her knuckles turning white. “Doctor, I might not be able to stop her. Her abilities… they are far above mine.”

The young Vulpo flicked her fluffy tail, stepping forward to shield me from the biting wind and snow with her own slender frame. A harsh cold current condensed in her palms as she prepared to counter the incoming strike. “The temperature is spiraling completely out of control. The opponent is far more accustomed to the cold than I am.”

Are they really going for a mutually assured destruction?

I shivered as the wind suddenly turned bone-piercingly cold. I rationally abandoned the idea of screaming for them to surrender; the howling blizzard would drown out my voice anyway.

On the tactical panel strapped to my wrist, the map covering the surrounding dozens of miles began to gradually stain with an ominous, bleeding red.

“She has no intention of talking to us at all. Disperse!” I grabbed an earpiece, hooked it onto the side of Wis’adel’s head—who was currently carrying me—and vaulted off her back, landing softly in the snow.

“Tighten the formation! Frostleaf, stop your Originium Arts, it is not necessary!” I promptly barked the order, stopping the Vulpo just as she was about to dangerously overexert her magical reserves.

That was the fundamental problem with young mercenaries. Pushed too hard by the cruelties of war and having received far too little love in their lives, they rarely said a word, but in reality, they were always ready to repay a tiny drop of care with their very lives.

The various environmental indices transmitted from our perimeter detectors were jumping wildly across the screen. They outlined a massive, swirling vortex in my mind, and our squad was standing right at its dead center.

An area of effect this impossibly large certainly could not be constructed by Frostnova alone. Boosted by the harsh tundra environment, this phenomenon was already comparable to a small-scale Catastrophe.

“Wis’adel, is your gun rusted yet?”

Click. The heavy, metallic sound of her Arts Unit assembling answered for me. The noisy, chaotic cries of the Nachzehrer souls trapped within, mixed with a terrifying blend of anticipation and sheer dissatisfaction, were eager to tear into reality.

“Now, fire in all eight directions. Simultaneously!”

Zzzzt— A teeth-grinding screech erupted from the six ancestral launchers at the exact same moment. Blood-red beams of destructive light descended from the sky like a divine judgment, instantly shattering the boundary lines of the previously closing low-temperature field.

I finally understood why the EW unit from my past life’s game roster was considered so overwhelmingly useful. In a pure one-on-one duel, she might be inferior to some of the true monsters of this world, but her absolute obedience and terrifying reaction speed were impeccable. More, she fit my personal command style perfectly.

The explosive yield, the blast direction, and the structural stability always aligned flawlessly with my tactical intentions. No matter how much she doubted my sanity in private, any command I gave, no matter how absurd it sounded, was executed by her immediately on the battlefield.

‘He said I can block it, so I must be able to do it.’

My command style was overly aggressive. I only ever felt truly at ease when I could hold every single variable in my palm like a chess piece on a board. As someone who was entirely honest with himself, I had to admit that her chaotic obedience and twisted loyalty satisfied my slightly dark desire for absolute control very well.

Of course, being honest with myself did not mean being honest with others. I would never tell her that out loud, not even if it killed me!

The eight bombs detonated simultaneously, sending shockwaves tearing through the blizzard. The massive low-temperature field was violently disrupted and forced to begin auto-repairs. The moisture concentration in the several directions that had previously been perfectly uniform instantly showed glaring discrepancies.

I scanned the fluctuating data roughly and spoke. “Frostleaf, tell me the core principle behind your Originium Arts.”

“Huh?” Frostleaf was completely dumbfounded by the sudden academic question in the middle of a warzone. She tried her best to describe it using highly abstract language. “It is just that my heart suddenly gets very hot, then pop, it goes through my whole body, then whoosh, it rushes to the release point, and finally…”

“Hey, who could possibly understand that!” Wis’adel almost laughed in pure anger over the public comms channel. “What is the use of a description like that…”

“The anti-tracking algorithm model has been successfully established, everyone.”

My voice on the command channel suddenly interrupted their bickering with absolute authority. A silver tactical screen was forcibly shared across everyone’s visual interface, and glowing red dots began to appear one by one. “Their Originium Arts linked together to form this cold disaster. Thank you for providing the principle, Frostleaf.”

Wis’adel stared at the screen. ‘?’

How the hell did he figure out a complex magical principle from a bunch of pops and whooshes?

“Now everyone disperse. I have divided the grid areas for everyone to resolve. Prepare to break through their lines.”

The originally blurry topographical map on the screen was rapidly dismantled into flowing, transparent numbers and geometric models. The most powerful caster hidden deep in the dark tundra was directly marked in a glaring light blue.

“Caught you…” I spun the floating electronic map with one hand, calculating the exact coordinates, and guided Wis’adel to bombard the critical connection point of the wind wall with her full firepower.

Along the precise direction my finger traced, the originally dim gray on the tactical map was violently torn into bright light blue along the trajectory.

The specifically marked formation core became even brighter on the display. It represented that stubbornly tragic person attempting to use her own life force to substitute for the other Yeti units that were gradually falling, desperately powering the low-temperature field.

“Little Wis, one more shot!”

As my fingertip tapped down on the screen, the second roaring Bursting Dawn completely annihilated the low-temperature field that was already on the verge of total collapse.

Far in the distance, that person’s body shuddered violently, finally unable to hold on any longer.

In just sixteen minutes, the Yeti Squadron’s proudest group spell was broken head-on.
