Chapter 92: The Seeker of Justice, A New Member of the Supernatural Society

“Eh, Brother?”

Yagami Sayu blinked in mild confusion as she returned from the restroom. She found Yozora sitting comfortably beside her brother, his arm slung casually over Light’s shoulder in a display of sudden, inexplicable camaraderie. She tilted her head, her innocent gaze darting between the two. “So you two know each other?”

Light offered a serene, perfectly measured smile. His flawless acting skills slipped into place like a second skin. “If you mean ‘know each other,’ we just met. Didn’t you want to look around Kyoto? This person happens to be a local, so I shamelessly asked him for some recommendations.”

“Oh, so that is how it is.”

The innocent Sayu harbored not a single shred of suspicion. She approached the table, a faint, shy blush dusting her cheeks, and extended a slender hand with a sweet smile. “Hello. My name is Yagami Sayu. I am his younger sister.”

Yozora returned the smile, reaching out to gently shake her hand. “Hello. My name is Ito Makoto.”

Sitting right beside them, Light nearly choked on his own breath.

‘Aren’t you Miyamizu Mitsuha?’

‘How did you suddenly become Ito Makoto?’

Sayu simply nodded. She stole a glance at Yozora’s striking features, a hint of adolescent shyness flashing in her eyes. “Then… can I call you Makoto-san?”

“No problem. Just do not cut off my head.”

Sayu blinked, completely failing to grasp the abstract, morbid internet joke. Her attention remained entirely captivated by his appearance. While her brother was undeniably tall and handsome, frequently receiving love letters tucked into his shoe locker at school, siblings rarely felt the full impact of each other’s charm after years of living under the same roof., purely in terms of raw visual appeal, Light was still slightly overshadowed by the young man sitting beside him.

“Then, Ito-kun.”

Light’s voice carried a deeply meaningful weight as he tested the fake name on his tongue. He was no fool. He understood perfectly well that the ‘Miyamizu Mitsuha’ alias provided earlier was just as fabricated as this one. And Ito Makoto? That hardly sounded like a genuine name either.

This stranger was actively guarding against him.

Was a real name that important? Was he simply cautious, preventing any background checks that might reveal his true identity? Or… as a fellow awakened user of Soul Manifestation, did this person possess some special ability that required a true name as a medium to activate?

Given Light’s usual careful nature, he would never rashly approach a dangerous stranger who knew the truth of the recent incidents without gathering prior intelligence. But as a transmigrator, Yozora understood the core of Light Yagami better than the boy understood himself. Hidden beneath that veneer of the perfect honors student was a mind starved for stimulation, a gambler who thrived on the razor’s edge of life and death.

Light retrieved his phone. Even in an era where smartphones dominated, he still used a classic flip phone. “Can I save your contact information?”

“No problem.”

Yozora smiled, pulling out his own device to exchange numbers and email addresses. Whether guided by the invisible hand of fate or the natural magnetic pull between anomalous existences, the two established a line of communication in a perfectly mundane manner that would never invite suspicion.

“You two were having such a good time talking while I was gone?”

Having finished her call to inform her mother about securing a suitable dojo practitioner, Yukinoshita Haruno returned to find Yozora chatting cordially with the Yagami siblings at the adjacent table. She covered her lips, a soft chuckle escaping her. She had to admit, the man’s social adaptability was terrifying. In the brief window it took her to make a single phone call, he had already integrated himself with total strangers.

“Hello.”

Though Haruno wore a warm smile, she was the de facto second-in-command of the Yukinoshita Construction Company. The natural, commanding aura she exuded made the middle schooler tense up instinctively. Sayu bowed with extreme caution. “I am Yagami Sayu. It is a pleasure to meet you. Please take care of me.”

“Do not be so nervous.”

At the mention of the surname Yagami, a subtle flicker of recognition crossed Haruno’s eyes, though her elegant expression remained entirely undisturbed. She stepped forward, gently patting Sayu’s head. “My name is Haruno, and I am this guy’s…”

She paused, tilting her head slightly to look at Yozora with a half-smile. Her voice dripped with playful implication. “By the way, what kind of relationship do we have now?”

Hearing a line straight out of a prime-time soap opera, Sayu’s face lit up with absolute thrill. What kind of dramatic development was this? It was exactly like the romance shows she watched with her mother, where the main couple hovered in agonizing ambiguity before finally breaking the barrier. She never expected to witness such premium gossip during a simple morning tea outing.

While Sayu silently reveled in the drama, Light analyzed the situation with cold precision. Since Yozora possessed a Soul Manifestation ability and could potentially read his thoughts, this interaction was a goldmine of psychological data. How would he answer? A cold, ruthless rejection? A gentle, diplomatic deflection? Or would he change the subject entirely? Over a dozen branching conversational paths mapped themselves out in Light’s mind.

But the answer Yozora provided shattered every single prediction.

Yozora tapped his chin, his eyes narrowing slightly as if performing complex mental arithmetic. He looked at Haruno with absolute sincerity. “Although we have a substantive relationship, in terms of chronological order, you can only rank fourth… oh wait, no. You are in fifth place now.”

A deafening silence descended upon the table.

Yozora then let out a dry chuckle. “Of course, you are also one of the frequent starting players, and you arrived just in time for the draft.”

Even the perpetually composed Light felt his eyes widen in sheer disbelief.

‘No, buddy.’

‘Are you actually playing it this real?’

It was one thing to string along two… no, five different women. But to look the fifth one dead in the eye and honestly inform her of her exact numerical ranking? Was he running a sports franchise draft lottery?

Though the Yagami siblings had just met Haruno, they could both sense the overwhelming, authoritative presence she commanded. She clearly hailed from a prominent, wealthy background. Would a woman of such staggering beauty and high status willingly accept being part of a five-person rotation?

“Is that so…”

Haruno’s lips curved upward. Under the dumbfounded stares of the Yagami siblings, she leaned in, her voice dropping into a sultry, dangerous register. “Some things do not operate on a first-come, first-served basis.”

Light and Sayu exchanged a blank, synchronized look.

‘No, your reaction is completely abnormal.’

‘Faced with a statement like that, you should be flipping the table and slapping the scoundrel! Why do you look so fiercely competitive? Are you actually fired up by this?’

“Very confident, Miss Haruno,” Yozora noted dryly.

Haruno took her seat, resting her chin on her palm with a radiant smile. “Alright, that is enough joking around. I have business to attend to later, so let us eat first.”

“Alright.”

Seeing Yozora settle into the seat opposite Haruno, Light stood up. He offered a polite nod and a measured smile. “Then, Ito-san, I will be staying in Kyoto for a few more days. If anything comes up, I will have to trouble you.”

Yozora picked up his water glass, taking a slow, deliberate sip before replying. “Of course. But remember not to go out wandering at night. Although the crime rate here has decreased, some places remain highly dangerous for outsiders.”

With his towering intellect, Light instantly decoded the underlying message.

Outsiders.

The man was issuing a veiled turf warning. This was Kyoto. This was his hunting ground.

“Thank you for the reminder. I naturally understand.”

Ever since awakening his power, Light had been systematically executing criminals, but he had zero intention of operating during this Kyoto trip. This was not his Tokyo stronghold. More, the Criminal Bureau Chief of the Kyoto Metropolitan Police Department was his own father, and he was currently traveling with his mother and sister. Acting rashly here would guarantee exposure. Light would never commit such a fatal, amateur mistake.

After the Yagami siblings departed, Haruno picked up a steaming, delicate pastry with her chopsticks. She placed it between her pink lips, chewing thoughtfully before nodding in approval. “The food here really is excellent. No wonder those two came all the way from Tokyo to try it.”

She paused, elegantly sweeping a strand of short black hair behind her ear. “By the way, our Kyoto Metropolitan Police Department’s Criminal Bureau Chief also happens to be named Yagami. That surname is quite uncommon.”

Yozora lifted his teacup, his tone entirely indifferent. “Light and Sayu are the son and daughter of that exact Criminal Bureau Chief. Naturally, they share the surname.”

“I see.” Haruno nodded, her expression unreadable.

She reached for a napkin, gracefully dabbing her fingers clean. Pulling a sleek wallet from her designer bag, she extracted a crisp stack of banknotes and placed them on the wooden table. “I will treat you to this meal. The one hundred and sixty yen for yesterday’s soda is included in this.”

“Leaving already?” Yozora asked, ignoring the money for the moment.

Haruno offered a faint nod. A complex, heavy emotion swirled in her dark eyes as she murmured, “As the eldest daughter of the Yukinoshita family, I carry the crushing expectations of far too many people. Because of that, I do not have the freedom to decide what I want to do, nor the freedom to choose who I spend my fleeting free time with.”

She stopped, a rare, fragile disappointment cracking her flawless mask. “Sometimes, I truly envy Yuki… never mind.”

The vulnerability vanished as quickly as it appeared, swallowed up by her signature mature, untouchable demeanor. The corners of her lips curled into a tantalizing smile. “You must be tired of hearing me complain since last night. Anyway, the company has an urgent crisis, so I must go. I will contact you in advance regarding the specific time and location of the underground fighting competition.”

Before pulling away, Haruno leaned in close. She bent down, her lips brushing just millimeters from Yozora’s ear. Her breath was warm and fragrant, carrying the faint scent of orchids. “I had a very happy time last night. See you next time.”

The afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across Yozora’s spacious living room.

Yotsuya Miko sat cross-legged on the floor, staring with lethal intensity at the black and white grid of the chessboard resting on the low table. A sharp, predatory glint flashed in her golden eyes, locking onto Yuigahama Yui sitting directly opposite her.

Slowly, with agonizing deliberation, Miko pinched a white stone between her slender index and middle fingers. She pressed it onto the wooden board with a sharp, decisive click. “Double three. I win.”

Yui stared blankly at the board for a full three seconds before the reality of the formation registered. She slumped forward, groaning in immense regret. “Ah, seriously! I completely overlooked that section. I made such a low-level mistake.”

Looking every bit the triumphant battlefield commander, Miko shook her head with grave solemnity. “Yui, lacking a complete view of the board will lead to catastrophic losses on the battlefield of life and death.”

Yui nodded vigorously, flashing a sweet, admiring smile. “As expected of Miko. You are truly amazing.”

“Of course.”

Sitting nearby on the plush sofa, Futaba Rio pressed a hand against her forehead, a heavy sigh escaping her lips as she took a sip from her ceramic coffee cup.

‘It is just a game of Gomoku.’

‘Is it really necessary to treat it like a feudal war? You are getting way too heated over Five-in-a-Row.’

Today, Miko, Yui, and Rio had gathered at Yozora’s house for an official internal meeting of the Supernatural Society. They needed to outline their next operational phase and, more, welcome a brand new member to their ranks.

When the sharp chime of the doorbell echoed through the hall, Rio set her coffee down. She prepared to stand and answer the front door.

But before she could even rise, the metallic click of a key turning in the lock echoed from the entryway.

The heavy door swung open. Stepping into the light was a breathtakingly beautiful girl dressed in a simple short-sleeved shirt, fitted jeans, and a stylish light blue hat.

Just one glance was enough to leave the three girls momentarily dazed.

Her skin was so impossibly delicate it looked as though it might break under a heavy touch. Silky, raven-black hair cascaded down her back, and even her casual attire could not hide the graceful, elegant curves of her figure. Her refined features carried a unique charm—a blend of mature sophistication and a languid, untouchable grace. Perhaps from the summer heat of her walk, a faint, attractive flush dusted her fair cheeks.

“Hello, everyone.”

Seeing Yui and the others gathered in the living room, Sakurajima Mai offered an impeccably sweet, practiced smile. She bowed slightly, offering a polite wave. “My name is Sakurajima Mai. It is a pleasure to meet you all.”

Even Rio, who possessed the most stoic and analytical personality of the group, found herself just as stunned as Yui and Miko.

To call it ‘astonishment’ was not an exaggeration in the slightest.

After Mai’s Puberty Syndrome had been resolved, the world’s memories of her had smoothly returned, including Rio’s. Serving as the Supernatural Society’s intelligence analyst and the logical brain behind their shameless leader, Rio had naturally compiled a complete dossier on Sakurajima Mai.

Reviewing the data, Rio had understood perfectly why the girl was a reigning national idol and actress. It was not merely her generational beauty. It was her devastating acting talent and the magnetic, gravitational pull she exerted with every casual gesture. Even through the sterile glow of a computer monitor, Rio had found herself drawn to the girl on the screen.

And now, seeing her in the flesh, Rio realized the camera had actually dulled her impact. Up close, her charm was suffocating. She felt infinitely more real, more vibrant, and sweeter than the untouchable idol projected on television.

“You are here?”

Hearing the commotion at the entrance, Yozora descended the wooden staircase from the second floor. He glanced at Mai standing in the foyer and spoke with his usual dry indifference. “Change your shoes and come in.”

Mai offered a familiar nod. She slipped off her outdoor shoes and, without missing a beat, stepped into a specific pair of indoor slippers resting neatly on the rack. She walked into the house with the practiced ease of someone who belonged there.

Behind her glasses, Rio’s eyes narrowed as a sharp jolt of surprise hit her system.

‘What is going on here?”Has she been to his house before? No, it is far beyond just visiting.”She has her own dedicated pair of slippers…’

‘Did Sakurajima Mai actually live here during the peak of her Puberty Syndrome? Does that mean they were genuinely cohabiting!?’

While Rio’s mind raced through the scandalous implications, Mai had already crossed the room to stand before Yozora. She looked up at him, her voice softening into a gentle, domestic tone. “You have not had dinner yet, have you?”

Yozora nodded with absolute, shameless righteousness. “That is correct. That is exactly why I specifically summoned you over.”

Mai froze. Her delicate eyebrows twitched in annoyance. She raised a clenched fist and delivered a light, punishing strike to his shoulder. “Are you seriously treating me as your personal private chef?”

“Eh, that is factually incorrect.” Yozora waved a hand dismissively, his expression turning gravely serious. “Mai-san, you are not my private chef. You are the exclusive master chef of our Supernatural Society.”

“Tch. As if anyone actually wants that title.” Mai pouted, turning her gaze away from him. When she looked at Yui, Miko, and Rio on the sofa, her tone instantly melted back into warm hospitality. “Yuigahama-san, Yotsuya-san, and Futaba-san, dinner will be ready shortly. Once it is done, I will bring it out and we can all eat together.”

Naturally, Rio and the others could not afford to be as brazenly impolite as Yozora. After all, this was their senior, Mai-senpai.

“Thank you very much, Mai-senpai,” Rio replied politely.

Yui immediately jumped up, raising her hand. “Mai-senpai, I will help you cook!”

Mai smiled, gently shaking her head. “It is fine, I can manage the kitchen by myself. Do you not have important Society matters to discuss?”

With that, Mai gracefully retreated into the kitchen. She tied a pristine apron around her waist and immediately began prepping the ingredients with fluid, practiced movements.

Watching her work, Rio could not suppress another soft sigh.

Her appearance was flawless. Her demeanor was elegant. Her social grace was impeccable, and she possessed elite culinary skills to match.

She was the absolute, undisputed pinnacle of a perfect girlfriend candidate.

Rio found it impossible to muster even a single ounce of hostility toward someone as radiant as Sakurajima Mai. Yet, deep down in the quiet, calculating corners of her heart, she recognized a terrifying truth.

In a certain, unspoken arena… she and Sakurajima Mai were absolute rivals.

[Inorin’s Note: “Ito Makoto” and “cutting off my head” is a reference to the notorious protagonist of the visual novel/anime School Days, who infamously meets a gruesome end via decapitation due to his extreme infidelity.]
