Chapter 48: Hero Appears

“What!?”

Yagami Soichiro’s expression twisted into a harsh scowl the moment the report reached his ears.

“Haven’t we already locked down every single entrance? Did they slip out of the Kyoto Municipal Kindergarten teaching building? Is it one of the kidnappers!?”

The Metropolitan Police Department officer standing before him wore a deeply conflicted expression. He shook his head slowly, choosing his words with extreme caution.

“Reporting, Commander… That person appeared directly on the open ground inside the school gate.”

“Appeared directly?”

Yagami Soichiro froze. The deep lines on his forehead creased together as he processed the absurd statement.

“Let me confirm this again. What exactly do you mean by ‘appeared directly’? Explain yourself clearly.”

“It is exactly what it sounds like, sir. Like a ghost. They just materialized out of thin air right in the middle of the courtyard.”

“How is that even logically possible!?”

Disbelief washed over Yagami Soichiro’s face. Tossing protocol aside, he marched straight toward the yellow warning tape, his eyes fixed on the distant gate of the Kyoto Municipal Kindergarten.

As the overall commander of this hostage crisis, the sheer impossibility of someone bypassing a multi-layered police barricade was secondary. The real nightmare was the tactical implication. What if the armed kidnappers inside saw this sudden intruder and mistook it for a police assault signal?

The criminals were already operating on a razor’s edge of instability. A single provocation could result in a massacre of innocent children.

The thought made Yagami Soichiro’s face darken until it looked like a thundercloud ready to burst.

The moment he reached the main gate, a technician hurried over with a digital camera.

“Commander Yagami, we managed to capture a photo of the intruder just now.”

Yagami Soichiro snatched the camera and stared at the small screen. The moment he processed the image, he understood why his subordinate had used the vague term ‘unidentified person’.

The figure in the grainy photo stood roughly 1.8 meters tall. Their face was entirely obscured by a black full-face mask, leaving only a pair of dark eyes exposed to the world. Pitch-black hair, extending down to the shoulders, was casually tied back with a thin, unremarkable string.

From the hairstyle alone, gender was entirely ambiguous.

The rest of the attire offered zero clues. A heavy black overcoat, black tactical pants, black shoes, and thick black gloves. Judging by the shoulder width and height, one might lean toward male, but a definitive conclusion was impossible. Not a single millimeter of skin was exposed. It was a complete informational void.

“This guy’s disguise… he is a seasoned professional.”

Yagami Soichiro ground his teeth together as he glared at the screen. Even with decades of experience handling major criminal syndicates, he could not extract a single usable profile trait from this ghost. The only factual data was black hair and dark eyes, which applied to nearly the entire population of the country.

“Where is he? Where is this person right now!?”

“Reporting, Commander. The suspect has already entered the Kyoto Municipal Kindergarten teaching building!”

“What!?”

Yagami Soichiro’s heart slammed against his ribs.

He actually went inside?

If this lunatic wanted to provoke a group of armed thugs and throw away his own life, that was his own business. But was he trying to drag dozens of innocent hostages down to hell with him!?

Meanwhile, miles away in the quiet club room of Sobu High School.

“Breaking news! According to frontline reporters at the scene, an unknown mysterious individual has completely bypassed the police cordon and broken into the Kyoto Municipal Kindergarten building. The situation inside remains highly volatile and unclear!”

Listening to the frantic voice of the news anchor echoing from the phone speaker, Yui Yuigahama and Miko Yotsuya exchanged a knowing, terrified look. They both understood immediately that the ‘unknown mysterious individual’ was Yozora, having simply bypassed reality by stepping through the Door.

Cold sweat pooled in their palms.

Yozora was a professional. He was a terrifyingly overpowered exorcist who treated legendary entities like Hachishaku-sama as mere pets or snacks.

But facing down a horde of heavily armed, trigger-happy thugs was a completely different reality than fighting an Evil Spirit.

What era was this? Who still played traditional exorcism games when bullets were flying? It felt like watching someone boot up a Kyoto Exorcism Simulator, expecting to fight urban legends, only to be thrown into a gritty hostage crisis and gunfight instead. It was a thrilling, horrifying clash of genres.

Miko Yotsuya and Yui Yuigahama were sick with anxiety, but they knew they were entirely powerless. They could only sit in the club room and worry.

Back at the scene, the reporters who had been broadcasting live from the school gate were now being aggressively shoved back by riot police.

The situation had escalated beyond control.

Yozora’s sudden, impossible intrusion had completely shattered the police’s tactical deployment. Yagami Soichiro, standing at the command tent, issued his final, grim directive.

The moment a single gunshot echoed from inside that building, the tactical teams would launch an immediate, full-scale assault.

He was no longer strategizing on how to negotiate a peaceful release for all the hostages. He was now calculating acceptable casualties and ensuring the kidnappers did not escape the perimeter.

If a bloodbath occurred today, his prestigious career as the Criminal Investigation Bureau Chief would be buried alongside the victims.

Inside the silent teaching building of the Kyoto Municipal Kindergarten.

“What a disgusting smell.”

To the eyes of any ordinary human, the main corridor of the teaching building was pristine. The polished marble floor reflected the fluorescent lights overhead, and the walls were decorated with cheerful children’s drawings.

But for Yozora, who possessed the Yin-Yang Eyes, the reality of the corridor was a grotesque nightmare.

A thick, foul-smelling layer of viscous fluid coated the smooth marble floor. It was not static. The sludge wriggled and pulsed slowly, as if the floor itself were a living, breathing organism. From the plaster walls on either side, thousands of dense, hair-like tentacles extended outward, swaying blindly in the stagnant air.

The sheer visual assault of the corruption was enough to make a normal person vomit their own stomach lining.

“Sure enough, this is not your run-of-the-mill Evil Spirit.”

Yozora casually surveyed the pulsing meat-corridor, his mind already categorizing the threat level.

To warp the physical environment to this extreme degree, the entity had to be an Evil Spirit operating at Hachishaku’s level, if not higher.

The most critical detail was the location. When Hachishaku altered her environment, she did so within the Inner World, a domain entirely saturated with spiritual power. But this entity was causing massive physical corruption in the real world of Kyoto, while simultaneously hijacking the minds of over twenty armed humans.

The mastermind behind this incident was delightfully complex.

Yozora reached up and adjusted the thin string holding his hair back. His natural hair was nowhere near shoulder-length. The extensions and the elaborate disguise were purely to feed the Metropolitan Police Department a wild goose chase, ensuring his peaceful daily life remained uninterrupted by pesky detectives.

A sudden, guttural shout echoed from behind him.

“Who the hell are you!?”

The sharp, metallic clack of a handgun being racked followed the shout.

Yozora turned around at a leisurely pace. Standing a few meters away was a man with a feral, bloodshot gaze. His face was twisted into a mask of pure paranoia, and his finger rested heavily on the trigger of a dark, heavy-caliber pistol pointed directly at Yozora’s chest.

“I am a negotiation expert sent by the Metropolitan Police Department.”

Yozora raised his gloved hands in the air, his eyes crinkling into a friendly, entirely fake smile beneath the mask.

“See? I do not have any weapons on me.”

“Negotiation expert?”

The thug’s bloodshot eyes darted up and down, scrutinizing Yozora’s bizarre, entirely black outfit. The suspicion on his face quickly morphed into something far more dangerous.

His facial muscles twitched, pulling his lips back into a deranged, sinister grin.

“We do not have any demands. Since you decided to walk in here, you can just die here.”

“That is wonderful news.”

To the thug’s absolute bewilderment, the masked man let out a soft, relieved chuckle.

“No negotiations. That is absolutely perfect.”

Yozora lowered his hands casually.

“You can act now, Hachishaku.”

Before the thug could even process the words, a towering, unnaturally elongated shadow materialized directly in front of him. The air temperature plummeted to freezing.

Hachishaku’s massive, pale hands reached out with terrifying speed. She placed her palms flat against the sides of the man’s temples. With a sickening, wet crunch, she pressed inward, popping the thug’s skull exactly like a cheap water balloon.

Blood and brain matter splattered across the wriggling, fleshy walls.

Watching the headless corpse slump heavily to the corrupted floor, Yozora stretched his arms and let out a lazy yawn.

“Killing all of you is the most convenient, most time-saving, and without a doubt, my absolute favorite option.”
