Chapter 43: I See Both Your Mothers as Two Good Fellows

Yui Yuigahama and Miko Yotsuya stood frozen in the living room, completely stunned.

Yozora, however, merely exchanged a long, meaningful glance with Sable. Though human and dog couldn’t speak the same language, a silent, telepathic understanding passed between them in that exact second.

‘Woof. What now?”What do you think?”Woof woof. This looks bad. I’m out of here.’

Watching the small dog immediately scramble under the safety of the sofa, Yozora’s mind shifted into high gear. He quickly calculated the variables. Right now, there were two distinct possibilities.

First: Yui’s mother had slept through the entire night and was completely unaware that her daughter and Miko had vanished for hours. If that were true, he only needed to fabricate a reason for standing in her apartment at five in the morning, just before dawn.

Second possibility: the girls’ midnight departure had woken her up. If that were the case, he would have to explain exactly where he had dragged two high school girls and a dog in the dead of night.

Why did he have to be the one to explain?

He glanced at the two girls beside him. They were rigid as statues, eyes wide, far too nervous to string a coherent sentence together. The answer was obvious.

Yozora’s gaze swept over the older woman’s face, analyzing the evidence. Sleepy eyes. Mid-yawn. Her long, peach-colored hair hung loose over her shoulders, completely lacking Yui’s signature side-bun. The verdict was clear: she had literally just rolled out of bed.

Logically speaking, if a mother realized her daughter and a guest had vanished at one in the morning, she would have called the police and stayed up in a frantic panic. She wouldn’t be yawning in her pajamas.

Therefore, only the first possibility remained.

This entire deduction took less than a second. Facing Yui’s mother—who was currently blinking at them with a mix of groggy confusion and mild wariness—Yozora instantly deployed a warm, perfectly crafted smile.

“Good morning. I’m a classmate of Yui and Yotsuya. My name is Yozora. It’s a pleasure to meet you, please take care of me.”

Hearing that gentle, polite tone—the kind of voice practically engineered to make adults lower their guard—Miko suddenly felt a chilling sense of déjà vu.

Don’t tell me… he’s doing it again?

“Yozora-kun?” Yui’s mother nodded slightly, returning the polite greeting before tilting her head in utter bewilderment. “Excuse me, but… is there something you need? Visiting us so early?”

“It’s like this,” Yozora lied without a single blink. “Yuigahama, Yotsuya, and I are all in the same club. Today, we have a special club activity, so we needed to head to school early to set up.”

“Is that so?” The older woman blinked, her brow furrowing slightly. “But Yui didn’t mention anything to me.”

“You really can’t blame her for that,” Yozora said smoothly, his tone dripping with earnest consideration. “Yuigahama told us that if she mentioned it, you’d definitely force yourself to wake up early just to make us breakfast. She didn’t want you to work so hard on your day off. Her plan was to sneak out and grab something at a convenience store, but it seems we accidentally woke you up anyway.”

Beside him, Yui was absolutely flabbergasted.

Good heavens, she screamed internally. Good heavens!

Did those lies just effortlessly slide out of his mouth? His acting was so flawless, so incredibly sincere, that if Yui hadn’t literally been there for the midnight ghost-hunting, she would have believed him herself.

“Oh, I see.” Yui’s mother clearly wasn’t the most skeptical person in the world either.

Yozora cast a brief, sidelong glance at the adorably gullible Yui. Like mother, like daughter. Everything made perfect sense now.

“I’m not going to scold you,” Yui’s mother said. She stepped up to her daughter, covering her mouth as a teasing giggle escaped her lips. Lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, she nudged Yui. “When did you make such a handsome male friend at school? You didn’t even tell your own mother. Could it be…?”

Yui’s face instantly flushed crimson. She waved her hands frantically. “No, no! It’s nothing like that, Mom! Don’t say weird things!”

“Hehe, it’s so great to be young.”

Watching the wholesome scene unfold, a stray thought drifted through Yozora’s mind. Yui and her mother looked incredibly alike. Standing side-by-side, they didn’t resemble a mother and daughter at all; they looked exactly like sisters.

Do I possess the lingering ambitions of Cao Cao? he mused dryly.

“You two, wait right there,” Yui’s mother said, suddenly turning her enthusiastic attention back to Miko and Yozora. “Even if you’re heading to school early for club prep, I absolutely forbid you from eating convenience store junk. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!”

She clapped her hands together. “Besides, it’s Miko and Yozora’s first time visiting our home. It would be terribly rude of me to let you leave on an empty stomach. Please, sit down and wait a bit. I’ll whip something up. It won’t take long!”

Without giving either of them a chance to decline, she practically herded Yozora and Miko toward the dining table, then spun around and hurried into the kitchen.

“Auntie, let me give you a hand.” Before he even fully sat down, Yozora pivoted, smoothly stepping into the kitchen to offer his services.

“Oh, Yozora-kun, you’re too sweet! But I can manage just fine on my own.”

“It’s no trouble at all. I’m just standing around anyway.”

A moment later, the sound of chopping echoed. “My, your knife skills are wonderful. Do you cook at home often?”

“Not too often, but I’ve picked up a few specific recipes.”

“It’s so rare to see a boy who knows his way around a kitchen these days.”

“Thank you for the compliment, Auntie. I’ll keep an eye on the miso soup for you.”

“Haha, then I’ll leave it in your capable hands. Let Auntie taste your cooking!”

Listening to her mother and Yozora chatting and laughing like old friends in the kitchen, Yui rested her chin in her hands and let out a long, helpless sigh.

Miko, wearing a similarly exhausted expression, reached over and patted Yui’s shoulder in solidarity. “You’ll get used to it. My mom is completely obsessed with him, too. Over the weekend, she kept pestering me to invite him over for dinner.”

The battle had commenced. The opponent: Yui Yuigahama’s Mother.

Yozora deployed the passive skill: Friend of Married Women.

[Ding! The skill ‘Friend of Married Women’ dealt super effective damage to Yui Yuigahama’s Mom!]

“So that’s how it is,” Miko muttered, rubbing her tired eyes. “You really don’t need to worry about Yozora being a loner at school. He’s actually terrifyingly good at socializing; he just actively chooses not to make friends with our classmates. You can drop that concern.”

“Is that so…” Yui mumbled, watching the kitchen doorway.

Five minutes later.

“All done.” Yozora wiped his hands on a towel and finally took his seat at the dining table.

Seeing him return, Yui immediately puffed out her cheeks and let out a soft hmph. “Why are you getting so chummy with my mom? I swear, she looked like she wanted to adopt you as her godson.”

“Godson? Oh, that absolutely won’t do. The censors would never approve that plotline,” Yozora replied, deadpan.

Miko frowned, leaning forward. “You should really consider my and Yui’s feelings here. My mother pesters me every single day to bring you home for dinner. What exactly is your endgame?”

Hearing the accusation, Yozora merely smiled. He raised a hand, gesturing for the two girls to come closer. “Please. Both of you, lean in.”

Hooked by his sudden mysterious demeanor, Miko and Yui suppressed their annoyance and leaned across the table, waiting for his grand revelation.

Yozora’s smile widened just a fraction as he lowered his voice to a scandalous whisper.

“I’ve observed that both of your mothers are exceptionally fine women. Why don’t we devise a plan to entice them into…”

“Die!” the two girls hissed in unison.

[Inorin’s Note: “Lingering ambitions of Cao Cao” refers to the famous warlord from the Three Kingdoms period, Emperor Wei Wu (Cao Cao), who was historically infamous for his fondness for taking beautiful married women and widows as his concubines. It’s a common Chinese internet slang joke for someone who likes MILFs.]
