Chapter 33: Yui Yuigahama’s Supernatural Commission

Yozora nodded thoughtfully. “Mm. Continue.”

Rio Futaba stirred her coffee. The glass stirring rod clinked rhythmically against the inside of the beaker, echoing in the quiet laboratory.

“What I’m about to say might sound absurd, but it technically falls within the scientific scope of quantum mechanics,” she said, her voice calm and measured. “A person’s subjective perception can, in some cases, directly affect reality. I wonder if you’ve heard of a thought experiment called Schrödinger’s…”

“Schrödinger’s Catgirl. Heard of it. Big fan.”

Futaba stared at him, her expression deadpan. “It’s called Schrödinger’s Cat. But since you’re already familiar with the concept, I won’t waste time elaborating.”

She lifted the beaker with both hands, taking a small, careful sip of the steaming coffee before continuing.

“Perhaps whether the ‘protagonist’s’ability awakens or not depends entirely on the’protagonist’s’ own perception of the enemy.”

“Understood,” Yozora replied smoothly. “The other ‘protagonist’ hasn’t awakened the ability to fight the enemy because, in her own mind, the very concept of fighting them doesn’t exist.”

Futaba blinked. “Huh? You actually understand what I mean?”

A rare flicker of genuine surprise broke through her usual stoic demeanor. She had spent the last few minutes mentally drafting the simplest, most idiot-proof way to explain quantum observation. She hadn’t expected him to grasp the core concept instantly.

“It’s not exactly rocket science. Of course I get it.”

As the old internet proverb went: When in doubt, quantum mechanics.

Even for something as bizarre as Puberty Syndrome, Futaba could always synthesize a theory that at least sounded scientifically plausible. Her analysis held obvious trial value.

Besides, to put it bluntly, the entire supernatural ecosystem—Evil Spirits, Psychics, Yin-Yang Eyes, and Soul Manifestation—relied heavily on idealistic concepts. Bridging those occult phenomena with the subjective perception theories of quantum mechanics was actually a highly practical approach.

“Thank you, Futaba.”

Yozora reached into his pocket, pulled out a chocolate melon pan he had snagged from the school store earlier, and tossed it lightly onto the lab table.

“For you.”

Futaba glanced down at the plastic-wrapped pastry, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Do you take me for a child?”

“If you want to project that insecurity onto a pastry, go ahead. No arguments here.”

He turned and headed for the sliding door. Just as his hand touched the handle, a brief flash of hesitation crossed Futaba’s face. She finally spoke up.

“What is it?” Yozora asked, pausing.

“If you… want to use the activity room, you can come by whenever. I don’t mind the company.”

Futaba’s initial impression of Yozora had been simple: a ridiculously handsome, terminally ill chuunibyou patient who treated reality like a joke. Logically, she shouldn’t be able to stand someone like him.

Then again, a more accurate assessment was that Rio Futaba wasn’t good at getting along with anyone.

Yet, during their two brief conversations, she hadn’t felt that suffocating, restless discomfort. She hadn’t felt the awkward pressure of trying to force a topic, nor the isolating sting of watching normal students chat enthusiastically while she sat on the sidelines.

It was just… relaxed.

That was the only way to describe how she felt around him. Even she found it baffling. How was she getting along so effortlessly with the school’s biggest weirdo?

“Sure. I’ll drop by when I have time.”

Yozora didn’t bother playing along with any tsundere tropes—tsundere had fallen out of the meta years ago anyway.

With a casual wave, he stepped out into the hallway and made his way back to Class 2-A.

The moment he dropped into his designated king’s throne at the back of the classroom, preparing to catch up on his sleep schedule, Miko Yotsuya practically teleported to his desk.

“How soon are we going to deal with that S-rank ‘door’?” she whispered frantically, her golden eyes darting around to ensure no one was eavesdropping.

Yozora let out a long, lazy yawn and waved her off. “At this stage? Trying to fight that massive snake spirit while simultaneously locking down the ‘Door’ is a massive pain in the ass.”

“Then what are we supposed to do?!” Miko stamped her foot, her anxiety spiking. “You literally just said the power of the ‘Door’ is going to keep growing! If we just sit around and wait, won’t it be even harder to fix later?!”

Facing the panicked girl, Yozora rested his chin on his hand and delivered his verdict with absolute indifference.

“Yep. Nothing we can do about that.”

Miko looked like she was about to pull her own hair out. “How are you not worried at all?!”

“Worrying is a low-tier strat. If panicking actually solved problems, I would have started stressing a long time ago.”

Before Miko could pop a blood vessel trying to argue, a cheerful blur of pink hair and bubbly energy bounced over to their desks.

“Yahallo!” Yui Yuigahama greeted them, flashing a bright, infectious smile.

Faced with this bizarre, alien greeting, Yozora’s internal visual novel UI immediately generated three dialogue options:

[Option 1: “Yahallo?”]

[Option 2: “Hello, Yuigahama-san.”]

[Option 3: “Acting cute? Are you sick?”]

Yozora bypassed the system and decisively wrote in a hidden fourth option.

“Speak like a human.”

Standing nearby, Miko physically facepalmed. ‘As expected of this guy,’ she thought miserably. Only Yozora could look at a girl as genuinely sweet and universally liked as Yuigahama and immediately hit her with a verbal sledgehammer.

Hearing the deadpan rejection of her catchphrase, Yui’s cheeks flushed with a hint of embarrassment. She laughed nervously, rubbing the back of her neck.

“Ahaha… um, well, there is one… wait, no, actually there are a few things I was hoping to ask you two for help with.”

“State your business,” Yozora said.

“You guys set up that Supernatural Quantum Mechanics Investigation and Research Club, right? The rumors have been going around the class, so there are some… weird things happening that people want you to look into.”

Yozora raised an eyebrow. “Then why aren’t they coming to ask me themselves?”

Yui puffed out her cheeks, staring at him in disbelief. ‘Have you looked in a mirror? Do you have zero self-awareness about your reputation as a terrifying delinquent?’

Naturally, she lacked the courage to say that out loud. She forced a polite smile and smoothly pivoted.

“Ah, you know, everyone is just a little shy! Since I’ve already talked to you a few times, they asked me to act as a middleman.”

“Is that so? Fine. Lay it on me.”

“Okay, so there are a couple of incidents.” Yui leaned in close, her voice dropping to a dramatic, hushed whisper. She looked left and right, milking the suspense for all it was worth. Miko, already prone to terror, leaned in as well, swallowing hard.

“Last Friday, a classmate accidentally left their bag in the classroom. By the time they realized it, it was past eleven at night. When they snuck back onto the school grounds to grab it, guess what they heard?”

“W-What?” Miko stammered, her knuckles turning white.

“Someone was playing the piano in the music room in the dead of night!” Yui gasped. “And the melody… it was filled with this chilling, lingering resentment! It’s definitely a vengeful spirit haunting the piano!”

“Is… is it really that scary?” Miko whimpered, already imagining a blood-soaked ghost slamming on the keys.

Unlike the trembling Miko, Yozora just rolled his eyes. He casually shifted his gaze to the desk next to his, where Kazusa Touma was currently buried under her arms, dead to the world in a deep slumber.

If the rest of the school didn’t know, how could he not?

Vengeful spirit? Please. That was just Kazusa grinding her piano practice in the activity room after hours. The girl was a maniac. She practiced at school until midnight, went home, and kept playing until the sun came up.

If she wasn’t pulling all-nighters, why else would she be passed out on her desk like a hibernating bear every single day?

It was pure, unfiltered nonsense.

Seeing Yozora’s completely unimpressed expression, Yui panicked and quickly waved her hands. “Wait, there’s more! There’s more!”

“This next one is actually about me,” she continued, her tone shifting to genuine concern. “Every night, right at 1:00 AM, my dog, Sable, just starts barking wildly at nothing. He used to be such a good boy, he never did anything like that before! That definitely counts as a paranormal event, right?”
