Anime Crossover: Eating Evil in a Daily World — Chapter 19
Chapter 19: Visiting Miko’s Home
Hearing this, Miko finally grasped the terrifying gravity of the situation.
The “Doors” scattered across Kyoto warped and mutated spiritual entities. If one of those anomalies manifested near her home… The mere image of her father—warm, humorous, and gentle in life—twisting into a grotesque, bloodthirsty abomination seized her chest. It felt like a physical hand crushing her lungs, making every breath a jagged gasp.
Worse, his soul had been lingering in their house this entire time. If a Door corrupted him into a violent evil spirit, the first victim wouldn’t be a stranger on the street. It would be her mother.
This was a nightmare Miko absolutely refused to let happen.
“What do I do?”
For the first time, the unreadable, stoic mask Miko usually wore shattered completely. Raw, unconcealed panic flooded her golden eyes.
Yozora shook his head. “It’s not about what you should do. It’s about what we should do.”
Miko’s breath hitched, her expression softening with desperate hope. “You… you’re willing to help me? Yozora?”
“Obviously. We’re club partners, aren’t we?”
“Club? What club?”
“Don’t sweat the details. Let’s talk on the way.”
During the taxi ride to the Yotsuya residence, Yozora casually pried into her family situation. Interestingly, this timeline deviated from his original memories—Miko didn’t have a younger brother. The house only held her and her mother.
Well, no, that wasn’t entirely accurate.
It was a mother, a daughter, and one lingering ghost.
Yozora had a secondary motive for offering his help, beyond the basic necessity of teaming up with a fellow psychic. Her father’s ghost was a massive anomaly in the supernatural ecosystem. Usually, when someone died harboring a heavy obsession, they morphed into a spiritual entity. Most became mindless repeaters trapped in a loop, or violent evil spirits driven by malice.
But Miko’s father retained his human rationality perfectly.
Yozora wanted a chat. If you wanted the inside scoop on the ghost world, who better to ask than a lucid ghost?
“The Supernatural… Quantum Mechanics… Investigation and Research Club?”
Miko pinched the bridge of her nose, letting out a long, exhausted sigh as she processed the name Yozora had just pitched. The supernatural part made sense—neither of them were exactly normal. But slapping ‘Quantum Mechanics’ into the mix was pure, unfiltered chuunibyou nonsense.
She didn’t even need a crystal ball to know that joining a club with such a cursed name, founded by a guy with Yozora’s infamous reputation, would instantly brand her as a total weirdo at Sobu High.
Still, she didn’t care.
Eradicating the threat of the evil spirits and those eerie Doors took absolute priority. Yozora hadn’t forced her into this; he never demanded her assistance. This was her own choice, a duty she felt bound to fulfill as someone burdened with the Sight.
Stepping out of the taxi, Miko approached her front door. She reached for her keys, hesitated for a second, and ultimately raised her knuckles to knock instead.
“Coming!”
The door swung open to reveal a beautiful, mature woman who shared Miko’s delicate features, currently drying her hands on a towel.
“Did you forget your keys again? Why are you knocking…” Her mother’s voice trailed off as she spotted the tall boy standing beside her daughter. She blinked in surprise. “Oh? And who might this be?”
“Hello there. I’m Yozora, Miko’s classmate.” Yozora stepped up smoothly, flashing a bright, entirely harmless smile as he assessed the woman’s youthful face. “You must be Miko’s older sister, right? It’s a pleasure to meet you. Please take care of me.”
Upon hearing the words ‘older sister,’ the woman’s eyes widened before she let out a delighted, airy laugh, waving her hands with a bashful flush.
“Oh my, oh my! You’ve completely misunderstood. I’m Miko’s mother.”
“No way!” Yozora gasped, his face the absolute picture of shock. “That’s impossible. You look way too young! You can’t be a day over twenty.”
“My, my, Yozora-kun, you certainly know how to flatter a woman. Do I really look that young?”
“Absolutely. If you stood next to Miko, anyone would swear you two were sisters.”
“Hahaha! Well, don’t just stand out in the cold. Please, come on in!”
Miko watched her mother beam with absolute radiance, warmly ushering Yozora inside while practically forgetting her own daughter existed. Miko shook her head helplessly.
Yozora already knew it was just the two of them living here. That whole ‘older sister’ routine was a calculated, shameless charisma attack. And yet, she had to admit, it was super effective against a full-time housewife.
When he wasn’t acting like an unhinged weirdo or spouting abstract internet slang, Yozora was dangerously charming. With his sharp looks, a smile that naturally disarmed people, and a silver tongue that targeted exact psychological weak points, he was a terrifying social predator.
As they stepped into the entryway, Miko’s mother finally noticed the heavy longsword in her daughter’s grip.
“What’s that you’re holding?”
Before Miko could even begin to fabricate a believable lie, Yozora smoothly hijacked the conversation.
“Ah, since it’s my first time visiting, I didn’t want to show up empty-handed. That’s an antique sword meant to ward off evil and protect the household. I hope you like it.”
“Oh my, oh my.” Her mother’s smile softened into pure fondness. “You really are too sweet. Just having you visit is wonderful, you didn’t need to bring a gift! You’re welcome here anytime, no presents required.”
“Thank you for having me, then.”
“You two must be starving. Dinner will be ready soon, so just relax in the living room for a bit.”
Miko stared in mild shock as her mother hummed happily and vanished back into the kitchen. She had been sweating over how to explain the sword, and Yozora had just casually spun it into a housewarming gift. Had he planned that from the start? While she was playing checkers on the first floor, this guy was playing 4D chess on the eighteenth.
Just then, the temperature in the hallway seemed to drop a fraction of a degree.
A man materialized in front of them. He looked to be in his forties, wearing glasses and a light blue turtleneck, sporting a few strands of gray in his hair. He leaned in close, inspecting Yozora with intense, gossipy scrutiny.
“Is this… your boyfriend? Seriously?” The ghost sighed heavily, his shoulders slumping in exaggerated despair. “Ah, you’ve already found a boy right after starting high school. You’ve grown up so fast… my poor, old fatherly heart is breaking.”
While the middle-aged ghost was busy muttering to himself and playing the tragic, heartbroken dad, Yozora suddenly stepped right into his personal space.
He extended his right hand directly toward the apparition and smiled warmly.
“Nice to meet you, sir. Please take care of me.”
