Anime Crossover: Eating Evil in a Daily World — Chapter 10
Chapter 10: The Truth About Fighting Evil Spirits
While Yotsuya Miko wasn’t exactly a genius, she certainly wasn’t dense enough to share a brain cell with a certain infamous chuunibyou patient.
After turning the concept over in her mind for a few seconds, the implications of Yozora’s theory finally clicked into place.
“So you’re saying,” Miko began, piecing the logic together, “if the prerequisite is being able to see them, not only does it break their restriction against harming humans, but it also means humans can hurt them back?”
Yozora gave a faint nod. “I can’t guarantee it with absolute certainty, but the odds are heavily in favor of that being the exact mechanic.”
As someone who had transmigrated into this world, Yozora had already deduced the underlying rules based on his past life’s knowledge of the original plot. In that timeline, Miko eventually crossed paths with other psychics. One of them was an old shrine grandmother whose handmade prayer beads actually possessed a faint, genuine ability to repel weaker spirits.
Of course, those cheap trinkets were nothing but an absolute joke when placed in front of a truly terrifying entity.
Through his own hands-on experimentation, Yozora had gathered solid empirical evidence to back up his theory. When he ran into Miko earlier that morning, the dramatic ‘I can see you’ declaration he threw at the grotesque spirit wasn’t just him trying to look cool.
Well, maybe it was a slight flare-up of his chuunibyou tendencies. But mostly, it was a calculated tactical trigger.
Yozora had discovered a fundamental rule of this world’s supernatural ecosystem: if an evil spirit remained completely unaware that he could perceive them, his attacks would simply phase through their ethereal bodies like empty air. He couldn’t inflict a single scratch.
Therefore, the reason such a massive swarm of grotesque entities constantly gravitated toward Yotsuya Miko was simple. A psychic with her level of potent, leaking spiritual energy acted like a glaring beacon in the dark. Even the mindless, instinct-driven aberrations felt a primal, existential threat from her—the exact same way a prey animal reacts to a natural enemy.
“Then how do I do it?” Miko asked, her voice tight. “How can I get the ability to actually fight them?”
A desperate glimmer of hope fractured the usual stoic calm of her cute face. It was a rare, raw expression of excitement. To be completely honest, she was utterly sick of her current self. She was exhausted from playing the role of the composed, unbothered high school girl while staring down rotting monstrosities, only to lock herself in a bathroom stall afterward to secretly wipe away her tears while her legs shook uncontrollably.
“Let’s table this discussion for tomorrow.”
Yozora casually waved a hand, completely shattering the dramatic tension.
“I have a tight schedule today. I won’t be free until after classes wrap up tomorrow afternoon.”
“A tight schedule?” Miko blinked, the hope stalling in her chest. “Are you going out to exterminate more evil spirits?”
“Not quite. I’m hitting the gym.”
Seeing the utterly blank, baffled look on Miko’s face, Yozora offered a matter-of-fact explanation.
“If you want to brawl with the supernatural, you need a solid foundation of physical fitness. Sure, I get a minor stat boost every time I consume an evil spirit, but maintaining a highly disciplined workout routine is absolutely necessary. I can’t afford to pull a hamstring or trip over my own feet when the real action starts.”
Having delivered his bizarrely practical wisdom, Yozora reached out and patted Miko heavily on the shoulder.
“Little girl, you still have a long, brutal road ahead of you before you can call yourself a professional exorcist. You’d do well to observe and learn from your senior, Yozora.”
Miko let out a long, exhausted sigh and shook her head. The burning urge to retort had been completely ground into dust by his endless stream of shameless, outrageous remarks.
“If that’s how it is, I’m just going to head home.”
Yozora nodded. “Want me to walk you back?”
“No need. My house is literally two stops away from here. I can just catch the bus and be back in ten minutes. Besides, don’t you have your very important gym schedule to maintain? I wouldn’t want to intrude.”
“Good point. I was only offering out of basic social politeness anyway. I didn’t actually want to walk you.”
Miko shot him a look of pure, unadulterated speechlessness before turning on her heel and walking away.
Yozora stood in place, watching her retreating figure shrink into the distance. The lazy, frivolous smirk slowly melted off his face, replaced by a cold, calculating intensity.
“Just as I thought. She can see the door, but she can’t see this.”
He muttered the cryptic words to himself before turning and walking off in the opposite direction.
Drifting silently through the air directly behind him was a colossal, disembodied hand. Its skin was a suffocating, morbid pale, tipped with jagged, pitch-black nails. The grotesque appendage was roughly the size of a standard family living room, hovering like a silent executioner, faithfully shadowing his every step.
Meanwhile, inside a high-end gym located a short distance from Sobu High School.
Hiratsuka Shizuka sat slumped in the rest area, wearing a loose track jacket and nursing a sports drink. She stared with absolute boredom at the woman occupying the treadmill a few feet away. Kirisu Mafuyu was currently sweating profusely, her athletic wear clinging to her figure as she maintained a punishing pace.
Shizuka shook her head, letting out a long, suffering groan.
“I’m seriously asking you, Mafuyu. You insist on dragging yourself here to work out every single day. Don’t you think you’re being a little too diligent?”
Despite having been running at a high incline for nearly twenty minutes, Mafuyu’s breathing remained perfectly measured. She replied in her usual crisp, clinical tone.
“As an educator, one must maintain an abundant reserve of physical stamina. Otherwise, one cannot properly fulfill the sacred duty of guiding the next generation of students.”
“I think you’ve just crossed the line into a fitness obsession,” Shizuka muttered, resting her cheek against the cool surface of the table. “Sigh… This is entirely your fault, you know. Dragging me to this sweaty torture chamber every afternoon is the exact reason I have absolutely zero time to go on dates.”
“Do not project your personal failings onto others,” Mafuyu countered smoothly, not breaking her stride. “With your physical appearance, if you genuinely wished to secure a romantic partner, you would have done so years ago. You clearly lack the internal motivation to date, so you cannot logically blame my workout schedule for your prolonged single status.”
“Tch. It’s still your fault.”
Mafuyu shook her head slightly. She reached out and pressed the stop button on the console, letting the treadmill slow to a halt. Grabbing a fresh towel, she dabbed the glistening sweat from her forehead and walked over, taking the seat directly opposite the sulking tomboy teacher.
“Setting that aside, how does it feel? You just finished your first day leading the new class.”
“Ugh, please don’t even bring it up.”
Shizuka buried her face in her hands, radiating an aura of utter despair.
“I seriously envy your position. Your class is packed with standard, predictable students. All you have to worry about is keeping their overall test scores up. Me? I’m constantly walking on a razor’s edge.”
Mafuyu picked up her water bottle, took a slow, measured sip, and set it down.
“You are referring to the two students with specialized talents, correct? It cannot be helped. They are, after all, exceptional individuals handpicked by the school board. To be entirely honest, even though I am not their designated homeroom teacher, I also harbor a desire to guide both her and him onto a constructive path where their unique abilities can be properly used.”
“Yeah, that’s incredibly easy for you to say from the outside,” Shizuka sighed, rubbing her temples. “Touma is honestly fine. She just sleeps through every single lecture and doesn’t cause any active disruptions. But that Yozora kid…”
Leaning forward, Shizuka unloaded the entire chaotic sequence of events from that morning, capping it off with the dark, violent rumors currently circulating through the student body regarding Yozora’s past.
Listening to the report, Mafuyu gave a noncommittal nod, her expression remaining perfectly neutral.
“I see. Given that he is a student with a documented history of inflicting physical harm during his middle school years, it is perfectly logical that you find him exceptionally difficult to manage.”
“Right? Exactly! Let me tell you, if the school administration hadn’t specifically…”
Before Shizuka could finish her rant, a sudden, aggressive burst of shouting erupted from the free-weight area across the room. She cut herself off, her brow furrowing in instant irritation.
“What is going on over there? Is it really necessary for meatheads to scream like that just to lift a piece of iron?”
Mafuyu glanced over Shizuka’s shoulder. A rare flicker of surprise broke through her usually stoic eyes. She leaned in slightly, lowering her voice.
“Wait. Isn’t that Yozora?”
Shizuka froze. She whipped her head around, her eyes scanning the distant crowd. Sure enough, Mafuyu’s sharp eyes hadn’t been mistaken.
Standing near the bench presses, dressed in a sleek black tracksuit, was Yozora. He was currently boxed in by a tight circle of massive, heavily muscled men. The atmosphere was thick with hostility, looking like it was mere seconds away from escalating into a full-blown physical brawl.
Shizuka didn’t waste a single fraction of a second. She slammed her drink onto the table, shot up from her chair, and marched straight toward the brewing violence.
Whatever personal headaches the kid caused her in the classroom didn’t matter right now. She was a teacher. Even if they were miles away from the Sobu High School campus, standing by and watching one of her students get cornered by a gang of adults was a line she would never cross.
“Hey! You idiots over there, knock it off right now!”
